Part 1.

오늘 두분이,

좋은마음으로 이렇게 결혼을합니다.

그런데 이렇게 좋은서로 ,

사랑하는 마음으로 결혼을 하는데,

이 마음이 십년, 이십년, 삼십년가면 얼마나 좋겠습니까?

여기 앉아 계신분들 ...

결혼식장에서 약속한 것 다 지키고 살고 계십니까 ?

이렇게 지금 이 자리에서는

검은머리가 하얀 파뿌리가 될때까지

아무리 어려운 일이 있거나, 어떤 고난이 있더라도

서로 아끼고 사랑하며 서로 돕고 살겠는가 물으면,

′예′ 하며 약속을 해 놓고는 3일을 못 넘기고 3개월, 3년을 못 넘기고

남편 때문에 못살겠다,

아내 때문에 못살겠다 이렇게 해서

마음으로 갈등을 일으키고 다투기 십상입니다.

그래서 그렇게 결혼하기를 원해놓고는

살면서는 ˝아이고 괜히 결혼했다,

이럴 줄 알았으면 안 하는 게 나았을걸˝하며

후회하는 마음을 나타냅니다.

그럼 안 살면 되는데 .....

이렇게 많은 사람들 앞에서 약속을

해놓고 안 살수도 없고

이래 어영부영 하다가 애기가 생기니까

또 애기 때문에 못하고,

이렇게 하면서 나중에는 서로 원수가 되어 가지고,

아내가 남편을 아이고 웬수야 합니다.

이렇게 남편때문에, 아내 때문에

고생 , 고생하다가 나이 들면서 겨우 포기하고

살만하다 싶은데, 이제 또 자식이 애를 먹입니다.

자식이 사춘기 지나면서

어긋난 행동을 하고 온갖 애를 먹여 가지고,

죽을 때까지 자식 때문에 고생하며 삽니다.

이것이 인생사입니다.

그래서 이렇게 결혼할 때는 다 부러운데,

한참 인생을 살다 보면 절에 스님이 부러워,

천주교 신부님이 부러워 ...

아이고 저 사람 팔자도 좋다 이렇게 됩니다.

이것이 거꾸로 된것 아닙니까?

이렇게 혼자 사는 ,

스님이 되는 것이 좋으면 처음부터 되지,

왜 결혼해 살면서 스님을 부러워합니까 ?

이렇게 인생이 괴로움 속에

돌고 도는 이유가 있습니다.

오늘 제가 그 이유를 말할 테니,

두 분은 여기 앉아 있는 사람(하객들)처럼

살지 마시기 바랍니다.

Part 2.

서로 이렇게 좋아서 결혼하는데 ....

이 결혼할 때 마음이 어떠냐,

선도 많이 보고 사귀기도 하면서

남자는 여자를,

여자는 남자를 이것저것 따져보는데,

그 따져보는 그 근본 심보는

" 덕 " 보자고 하는 것입니다.

저 사람이 돈은 얼마나 있나,

학벌은 어떻나,

지위는 어떻나,

성질은 어떻나,

건강은 어떻나, 이렇게 다 따져 가지고

이리저리 고르는 이유는

" 덕 " 좀 볼까 하는 마음입니다.

손해 볼 마음이 눈 꼽 만큼도 없습니다.

그래서 덕볼수 있는것을 고르고 고릅니다.

이렇게 골랐다는 것은

덕 보겠다는 마음이 있습니다.

그러니 아내는 남편에게 덕 보고자 하고,

남편은 아내에게 덕 보겠다는 이 마음이,

살다가 보면 다툼의 원인이 됩니다.

아내는 30%주고 70% 덕 보자고 하고,

남편도 자기가 한 30%주고 70% 덕 보려고 하니,

둘이 같이 살면서 70%를 받으려고 하는 데,

실제로는 30%밖에 못 받으니까

살다 보면 결혼을 괜히 했나

속았나 하는 생각을 십중팔구는 하게 됩니다.

속은 것은 아닌가,

손해 봤다는 생각이 드니까 괜히 했다,

이런 생각이 듭니다.

그런데 이 덕보려는 마음이 없으면 어떨까 ?

좀 적으면 어떨까요? ˝

아이고 내가 저분을 좀 도와 줘야지,

저분 건강이 안 좋으니까

내가 평생 보살펴 줘야겠다.

저분 경제가 어려우니 내가 뒷바라지 해줘야겠다,

아이고 저분 성격이 저렇게 괄괄하니까

내가 껴안아서 편안하게 해줘야겠다.˝

이렇게 베풀어 줘야겠다는 고운 마음으로 결혼을 하면,

길가는 사람 아무하고 결혼해도

별 문제가 없습니다.

그런데 덕 보겠다는 생각으로 고르면,

백 명 중에 고르고 또 고르고 해도, 막상 고르고

보면 제일 엉뚱한 걸 고른 것이 됩니다.

그래서 옛날 조선시대에는

얼굴도 안보고 결혼해도 잘 살았습니다.

시집가면 죽었다 생각하거든...

죽었다 생각하고 시집을 가보니

그래도 살만하니까 웃고 사는데,

요새는 시집가고 장가가면 좋은 일이 생길까 ...

기대하고 가보지만 가봐도 별 볼 일이 없으니까,

괜히 결혼했나 후회가 됩니다.

결혼식하고 몇 일 안돼서부터 후회하기 시작합니다.

어떤 사람은 결혼하기 전부터

후회하는 사람도 있습니다.

신랑신부가 둘이서 혼수 구하러 다니다가

의견차이가 생겨서 벌써 다투게 됩니다.

심지어는 안 했으면 하지만 날짜를 잡아놔서

그냥 하는 사람들도 제가 많이 봅니다 .

오늘 이 자리의 두 사람이 하느님 앞에 약속하고

부처님 법문을 소중히 생각하면서

서로에게 약속하고 또한 양가부모님 하객들 앞에서

굳은 언약으로 시작합니다

제일 중요한 것은 오늘 이 순간부터는 덕 보겠다는 생각을 버려야

됩니다.

내가 아내에게, 내가 남편에게 무얼 해줄 수 있을까,

내가 그래도 저분하고 살면서 ....

저분이 나하고 살면서 ....

그래도 좀 덕 봤다는 생각이 들도록 해줘야 않느냐,

이렇게만 생각을 하면 사는데 아무 지장이 없습니다.

그런데 심보를 잘못 가져놓고 자꾸 사주팔자를 보려고 합니다.

궁합 본다고 바뀌는게 아닙니다.

바깥 궁합 속 궁합 다보고 삼 년을 동거하고 살아봐도

이 심보가 안 바뀌면 사흘 살고 못 삽니다.
그러니 이 하객들은 다 실패한 사람들이니까

괜히 둘이 잘살면 심보를 부립니다.

남편에게 !

왜 괜히 바보같이 마누라에게 !

왜 나는쥐어 사나, 이렇게 할 것 뭐 있나＇ 하고,

아내에게는 ′니가 왜 그렇게 남편에게 죽어 사나,

니가 얼굴 이 못났나 왜 그렇게 죽어 사노′

이렇게 옆에서 살살 부추기며,

결혼할 땐 박수 치지만

내일부터는 싸움을 붙입니다.

이런 말은 절대 들으면 안됩니다.

이것은 실패한 사람들이

괜히 심술을 놓는 것입니다.

남이 뭐라고 해도 ˝나는 남편에게 덕되는 일 좀 해야 되겠다.

남이 뭐라 그러든,어머니가 뭐라 그러든 아버지가 뭐라 그러든,

누가 뭐라 그러든 나는 아내에게

도움이 되는 남편이 되어야겠다.˝

이렇게 지금 이 순간 마음을 딱 굳혀야 합니다.

괜히 애까지 낳아놓고 나중에 이혼한다고

소란 피우지 말고 지금 생각을 딱 굳혀야 됩니다.

신랑신부는 그렇게 하시겠어요 ?

덕 보지 않아야 돼요 ?

손해 봐야 돼요 ? ′

손해 보는 것이 이익이다′

이것을 확실하게 마음속에 심어야 합니다.

오늘 두분 결혼식에 참여한 사람들은 반성 좀 해야 합니다.

이렇게 두 분의 마음이 딱 합해지면, 어떻게 되느냐,

아내의 오장육부가 편안해집니다.

이 오장육부가 편해지면 어떻게 되느냐,

임신해서 애기를 갖게 될 때

영가들도 죽을 때 초조 불안해 죽은 귀신도 있고,

편안하게 도 닦다 죽은 사람도 있습니다.

편안한 데는 편안한게 인연을 맺어오고,

초조불안 하면 초조 불안한 게 딱 들어옵니다.

그래서 이것을 잉태라고 합니다.

태교가 아니고, 잉태할 때 여자가

마음이 편안한 상태에서 잉태를 하면 선신을 잉태를 하고,

심보가 안 좋을 때 잉태를 하면

악신을 잉태합니다.

그렇기에 처음에 씨를 잘 받아 야 합니다.

그런데 대부분 결혼해 가지고

덕 보려고 했는데 손해를 보니까,

심사가 뒤틀려 있는 상태에서 같이 자다 보니 애가 생깁니다.

기도하고 정성 다해서 애가 생기는 것이 아니고,

그냥 둘이 좋아 가지고 더부덕 ....

덥덥 하다 보니까 애기가 생겨버립니다.

그러니 이게 처음부터 태교가 잘못됩니다.

이렇게 잉태해 가지고는 성인 낳기는 틀린 것입니다.

그리고 여러분들이 밥 먹고 짜증내고 신경질 내면,

나중에 위를 해부해보면 소화가 안되고 그냥 있습니다.

이 자궁이라는 것은

어머니의 오장육부하고 연결이 되어있습니다.

이것이 신경을 곤두세우고 짜증을 내면

오장육부가 긴장이 되어있습니다.

안에 있는 애기가 늘 긴장 속에서 살아가야 합니다.

그래서 이것이 선천적으로 신장질환이 생기든지

아이가 불안한 마음을 갖습니다.

엄마가 편안한 마음을 갖고 있고

원기가 늘 따뜻하게 돌고,

애기가 그 안에 있으면 그렇게 편안할 수가 없어요.

그러니까 이 아이는 나중에 태어나도

선천적으로 도인처럼 편안한 사람이 됩니다.

그러니까 남편이 어떻든,

세상이 어떻든 애를 가진 이는 편안해야 합니다.

편안 하려면 수행을 해야 합니다.

그런데 아내가 편안한 것은 누구의 영향을 받느냐

바로 남편의 영향을 받습니다.

Part 3.

남편이 애는 좋은 애를 낳고 싶으면서

아내를 걱정시키면 좋은 아이를 낳을 수가 없습니다.

그러니까 아내가 애를 가졌다고 하면

집에 일찍 들어오고,

나쁜 것은 안 보여주고,

늘 아껴주고 사랑해줘서 거들어 줘야 합니다.

시어머니들도 손자는 좋은 것을 보고 싶은데,

며느리를 볶으면 손자가 나쁜 애가 나옵니다.

그러니까 며느리가 편안하도록 해줘야 합니다.

제일 중요한 것은 누가 뭐라고 해도

본인이 편안한 것이 제일 좋고,

주위에서도 이렇게 해줘야 합니다.

이렇게 정신이 중요하고,

두 번째는 음식을 가려먹어야 합니다.

육식을 조금하고 채식을 많이 하고,

술 담배를 멀리하고 이렇게 해야 애기가 좋습니다.

그리고 세 번째,

애기를 낳은 후에 아무것도 모른다고

둘이서 서로 싸운다면 안됩니다.

한국에서 태어나면 한국말 배우고,

미국에서 태어나면 미국 말 배우고,

일본에서는 일본말 배우고,

원숭이 무리에서 자라면 원숭이 되는 것이 사람입니다.

그러니까 어릴 때 부모가 하는 것을

그대로 본받아서 아이의 심성이 됩니다.

그래서 옛날부터 세 살 버릇 여든까지 간다는 말이 있습니다.

그런데 애기가 조그만 하다고

애기를 옆에 두고 둘이서 짜증내고 다투면,

사진 찍듯이 그대로 아기 심성이 결정이 납니다.

그래서 아버지가 술 주정하고 그러면

아이가 나는 크면 절대로 그렇게 안 할거야

하지만 크면 술 주정합니다.

다투는 집에서 태어나면

자기는 크면 절대로 다투지 않겠다고 하지만

크면 다투게 되어 있습니다.

왜냐하면 그대로 모방해서 하기 때문입니다.

그러니 애기를 낳으려면 직장을 다니지 말아요.

아니면 3년은 직장을 그만두어요.

아니면 애기를 업고 직장에 나가든지.

이렇게 해서 아이를 우선적으로 해야 합니다.

아이를 우선적으로 하려면 아이를 낳고,

안 그러려면 안 낳아야 합니다.

안 그러면 아이가 복 덩어리가 되는 것이 아니라

아이가 인생을 망치는 고생덩어리가 됩니다.

애 때문에 평생 고생하고 살게 됩니다.

3년까지만 하면

과외 안 시켜도 괜찮고 아무 문제가 없습니다.

제 말 잘 들으십시오.

이렇게 안 하려면 낳지를 말고

낳으려면 반드시 이렇게 하십시오.

그래야 나도 좋고 자식도 좋고 세상도 좋습니다.

잘못 애 낳아서 키워놓으면 세상이 시끄럽습니다.

반드시 이것을 첫째 명심하십시오.

가정에서 이것이 첫째입니다.

두 번째, 제가 신도 (성도님) 분들 많이 만나보면,

애 때문에 시골 살면서 남편 떼어놓고

애 데리고 서울로 이사 가는 사람,

애 데리고 미국에 가는 사람이 있는데 이것은 절대 안됩니다.

두 부부는 애기 세 살 때까지만 애를 우선적으로 하고

그 이후에는 어떤 일이 있더라도

남편은 아내, 아내는 남편을 우선으로 해야 합니다.

애기는 늘 이차적으로 생각하십시오.

대학에 떨어지든지 뭘 하든지 신경 쓰지 마십시오.

누가 제일 중요하냐 ?

아내요, 남편이 첫째입니다.

남편이 다른 곳으로 전근가면 무조건 따라가십시오.

돈도 필요 없습니다.

학교 몇 번 옮겨도 됩니다.

이렇게 남편은 아내를, 아내는 남편을

중심으로 놓고 세상을 살면,

아이들은 전학을 열 번 가도아무 문제없이 잘삽니다.

그런데 애를 중심으로 오냐 오냐 하면서

자꾸 부부가 헤어지고 갈라지면,

애는 아무리 잘해줘도 망칩니다.

여기도 그렇게 사는 사람 있을 것입니다.

오늘부터 정신차리십시오.

제 얘기를 선물로 받아 가십시오.

이렇게 해야 가정이 중심이 서고 가정이 화목해집니다.

이렇게 먼저 내가 좋고 가정이 화목한 것을 하면서

내가 사는 세상에도 기여를 해야 합니다.

우리만 잘산다고 되는 것이 아닙니다.

그러니까 늘 내 자식만 귀엽게 생각말고,

이웃집 아이도 귀엽게 생각하고,

내 부모만 좋게 생각하지 말고

이웃집 노인도 좋게 생각하고,

이런 마음을 내면 어떠냐,

내가 성인이 되고 자식이 좋은 것을 본받습니다.

그리고 부모에게 불효하고 자식에게 정성을 쏟으면

반드시 자식이 어긋나고 불효합니다.

그런데 늘 자식보다는 부모를,

첫째가 남편이고 아내고,

두 번째는 부모가 돼야 자식이 교육이 똑바로 됩니다.

애를 매를 들고 가르칠 필요 없이,

내가 늘 부모를 먼저 생각하면

자식이 저절로 됩니다.

그러니까 애를 키우다

나중에 저게 누굴 닮아 그러나 하면 안됩니다.

누굴 닮겠습니까?

둘을 닮습니다.

다시 한번 말씀 드립니다.

나쁜 인연을 지어서

나쁜 인과 응보를 받아

나중에 후회하지 말고,

반드시 인연을 잘 지어서

처음에 조금만 노력하면

나중에 평생 편안하게 살 수 있습니다.

두 부부는 서로 도움이 되는 사람이 되려고 해야 합니다.

자식을 낳으려면 잉태 할 때와 뱃속에 있을 때,

세 살 때까지가 중요하니 마음이

편안해야 하고 부부가 화합해야 합니다.

주로 결혼해서 틈이 생길 때 애가 생기고,

저 남자와 못살겠다 할 때,

애기를 키우기 때문에 아이들이 사춘기가 되면,

부모에게 저항을 하게 되는 것입니다.

애가 중학교까지 잘 다니다가

고등학교 가더니 그렇다,

친구 잘못 사귀어서 그렇다고 하지만,

그렇지가 않습니다.

콩 심은 데 콩 나고 팥 심은 데 팥 납니다.

그러니 이미 애기가 그렇게 되었거든

지금 엎드려서 참회를 하여야 고쳐집니다.

지금 이 부부는 안 낳았으니까 반드시 그렇게 낳아야 합니다.

세 번째 남편을 아내를 서로 우선시 하고

자식을 우선시 하지 않습니다.

첫째가 남편이나 아내를 우선시하고 둘째가 부모를 우선시하지,

남편이나 아내보다도 부모를 우선시 하면 안됩니다.

그것은 옛날 이야기입니다.

일단 아내와 남편을 우선시 할 것,

두 번 째 부모를 우선시 할 것,

세 번째 자식을 우선시 할 것,

이렇게 우선 순위를 두어야 집안이 편안해집니다.

그러고 나서 사회의 여러 가지도 함께 기여를 하셔야 합니다.

이러면 돈이 없어도 재미가 있고,

비가 새는 집에 살아도 재미가 있고,

나물 먹고 물 마셔도 인생이 즐거워집니다.

즐겁자고 사는 거지 괴롭자고 사는 것이 아니니까,

두 부부는 이것을 중심에 놓고 살아야 합니다.

그래야 남편이 밖에 가서 사업을 해도사업이 잘되고,

뭐든지 잘됩니다.

그런데 돈에 눈이 어두워 가지고

권력에 눈이 어두워 가지고,

자기 개인의 이익에 눈이 어두워 가지고

자기 생각 고집해서 살면 결혼 안 하느니 보다 못합니다.

그러니 지금 좋은 이 마음 죽을 때까지 내생에까지 가려면

반드시 이것을 지켜야 합니다.

이렇게 살면 따로 머리 깎고 스님이 되어 살지 않아도,

해탈하고 열반할 수 있습니다.

그것이 대승보살의 길입니다.

또한 하나님이 주신 가장 축복받은

하나님의 자녀답게 사는 지혜인 것입니다

제가 부주 대신 이렇게 말로 부주를 하니까

두 분이 꼭 명심하시기 바랍니다.

머리쓰면 살빠져요

두뇌도 운동을 한다. 운동을 하면 할수록 많은 산소와 칼로리를 소비한다. 이를 알아보는 간단한 실험방법이 있다. 목욕탕이나 세면대에 물을 받아 머리를 담그고 숨을 참아본다. 이 때 아무 생각도 안하고 멍하니 있으면 개인 차는 있지만 1분 가량은 버틸 수 있다.

하지만 머리를 담근 뒤 ‘125 곱하기 23은?’ ‘내일 해야 할 일 다섯 가지가 뭐였더라?’ 따위를 생각하면 50초가 채 되지 않아 숨이 차서 더 참지 못 하게 된다. 생각을 하면 뇌가 운동을 하므로 이 때 산소가 많이 소비되기 때문이다. 3분 이상을 잠수할 수 있는 프로페셔널도 마찬가지다.

다이어트를 위해서 운동이 필수적이라는 사실은 누구나 알고 있다. 하지만 이 운동에는 흔히 생각하는 신체 운동뿐 아니라 두뇌 운동도 포함될 수 있다.

뇌의 무게는 우리 몸의 2%에 불과하다. 하지만 총 에너지의 20%, 흡입한 산소량의 25%, 일일 칼로리의 30%, 탄수화물의 65% 등의 많은 영양분을 소모하는 기관이 바로 뇌이다. 뇌가 활발히 활동을 하면 당연히 뇌가 필요로 하는 에너지도 많아지게 된다. 공부를 하거나, 집중해서 업무를 하는 등 뇌를 많이 사용하는 경우, 쉽게 배가 고파지는 이유가 뇌 활동량에 있는 것이다.

운동시 소비되는 에너지는 체중에 비례하게 되는데 앉아서 글쓰기(공부나 업무도 마찬가지)는 체중당 1.74k㎈를 필요로 한다. 따라서 60㎏의 사람이 한시간 동안 앉아서 글쓰기를 한다면 104.4k㎈를 소비하게 된다. 반면 단순히 앉아있는 경우에는 1.26k㎈, 누워있는 동안 소모되는 에너지는 0.18k㎈에 불과하다. 60㎏의 사람이 한시간 동안 가만히 앉아있는 경우 75.6k㎈, 누워있는 경우에는 앉아서 글쓰기의 10분의1에 해당하는 10.8k㎈만을 소모하게 된다.

365mc비만클리닉의 김하진 수석원장은 “체중감량을 위해서는 걷기 등 신체적 운동을 통한 활동 대사량을 높이는 것도 중요하지만 신체 장기들의 운동에 의한 기초대사량을 높일 수 있는 방법을 많이 활용하는 것도 좋다”며 “우리 몸의 장기를 자신의 의지로 움직이게 하는 것이 쉽지는 않지만 뇌활동을 통한 기초대사량은 스스로 증강시켜볼 수 있다”고 설명한다. TV나 영화를 보는 수동적인 활동보다 책을 읽거나 사색, 시작(詩作) 등 창의적인 생각을 하는 것이 뇌활동을 활성화 시킬 수 있다고 김 원장은 조언했다.

두뇌 영양을 좋게 하는 음식으로는 비타민B군과 오메가3 지방산이 풍부한 식품을 들 수 있다. 비타민 B군이 함유된 식품은 간, 콩팥, 쌀겨, 밀의 눈, 이스트, 요구르트 등으로, 비타민 B1은 맥주효모, 현미(쌀눈), 밀(소맥)눈, 콩, 버섯, 이스트, 돼지고기(등심살, 허벅지살), 김, 말린 장어 등에 풍부하고, 비타민 B2와 B12는 육류, 닭고기, 생선 등 동물성 식품과 유제품, 난류(계란), 녹색채소(시금치), 곡류, 이스트, 표고버섯에 풍부하다. 호두, 땅콩, 아몬드 등의 견과류는 정신 기능을 강화하는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 신선한 과일과 야채, 해조류와 어유(魚油)는 기억력을 증강시킨다.

행복한 남녀는 함께 있을 때 혈압이 내려간다는 연구발표가 있다. 서로를 지지하는 관계의 커플들은 서로에게 안정감을 느낀다는 뜻이다.

가끔 우리는 상대방에게 안전하지 않은 느낌을 줄 때도 있고, 반대로 그런 느낌을 상대로부터 받을 때가 있다. 안전하다는 느낌, 이것은 상대에 대한 신뢰이고, 관계의 안정성이다.

나는 상대에게 안전하다는 느낌을 주는가? 아니면 긴장감을 주는가?
안전한 공간을 만들어야 하는 이유
▶ 1. 불안감을 주는 관계
사랑하는 사람의 한마디는 아주 중요해진다. 때로는 너무 예민해져서 그 사람의 사소한 비판이나 몸짓이나 분위기 변화에도 민감하게 반응하게 된다.

그런데 우리는 상대로부터 반박하기에 위험하다, 연약함을 보이는 건 위험하다, 긴장감을 늦추는 건 위험하다는 등의 느낌을 가질 때가 있다.

*A씨 부부의 예
-말다툼을 할 때마다 남편은 부부관계에 대한 본질적인 고민을 한다. 영화 선택 같은 사소한 의견이 맞지 않을 경우에도 함께 있어서는 안될 사이인지도 모른다는 말을 하는 것이다. A씨 부인은 남편의 지나치게 심각한 태도가 불안해서 가능하면 언쟁을 피하려고 한다.

▶ 2. 성공적인 관계를 원한다면...

부부 사이에 안전한 공간을 만들어야 한다. 당신이 연약해지고, 솔직해질 수 있는 공간, 위험을 감수할 수 있는 공간, 두려움 없이 반박할 수 있고, 마음을 열 수 있는 공간이 필요하다.

▶ 3. 안전하거나 위험하거나 항상 선택의 여지가 있다.

*지독한 독감을 며칠 앓고 난 남편이 아내에게 말했다. “이렇게 누워있으니까 늙어서 당신한테 짐이 될까봐 걱정돼.”
이 말을 들은 아내의 반응은 여러 가지일 수 있다. “설마 짐스럽게 늙으려는 건 아니죠?”라고 남편을 겁나게 만들 수도 있고, “어린애처럼 굴지 말아요..”라고 그의 두려움을 무시할 수도 있고, “우린 함께 늙어갈 거예요..”라는 호의적인 말로 안전한 느낌을 줄 수도 있다.

이렇게 상대가 연약한 부분을 드러내는 순간들이 있다. 이 때야말로 상대에 대한 자신의 진심을 시험해볼 수 있다. 이 순간을 안전하게 만들어줘야 보다 친밀한 관계가 형성된다.

상대를 ‘인질로 잡고 있지는 않는가?
▶ 1. 안전한 공간을 만드는 것은 붙잡고 있는 인질을 풀어주는 것이다.

불평하거나 짜증내거나 숨기는 것, 지나치게 극적이거나 자제력을 읽는 것, 이런 것들이 관계를 불안하게 만든다. 그럴 경우 당신은 상대를 인질로 붙잡고 있는 것이다. 당신을 아끼고 사랑하고 함께 있고 싶어하는 마음을 이용하는 것이다.

▶ 2. 안전함을 확보하는 방법

당신의 자제력을 풀게 되면 상대에게 느긋하고 인간적일 수 있는 여유를 주게 된다.

▶ 3. 안전한 공간을 만든다는 것은...

51은 1941년 처음 나온 이래로 모두 이천만개 이상 팔린 최고의 펜이었습니다.
왜 하필 51이냐하면, 처음 개발이 완료된 해가 1939년인데, 이때가 바로 회사 창립 51년째였습니다.
세계 어느 곳에서도 통용될 수 있고, 쉽게 알아볼 수 있게 하기 위하여 독특한 파커의 숫자 이름은 이렇게 시작되었습니다.
(그 후에 61, 45, 75등 많이도 나왔지요^^)
아마 51만큼 많은 화제를 뿌린 펜도 드물텐데, 개발부터 화제였습니다.
당시로서는 대단한 액수인 백만달러 이상의 개발비를 들였기 때문이었고, 출시 후 나타난 폭발적인 반응도 역시 화제였습니다.

두번째로는 당시로서는 획기적인 신소재를 적용하였습니다.
고대로 부터 필기구가 가진 최대의 단점은 빨리 마른다는 것이었습니다.
이에 대한 연구는 1930년대에 본격적으로 시작되었는데, 이 단점을 제거하기 위하여 채택된 방법이 증발이 거의 되지 않는 금속성 잉크를 개발해내는 것이었습니다.
하지만 이것은 당시 펜제작사들이 일반적으로 사용하는 펜의 소재인 셀룰로이드에 신속하게 스며드는 단점이 있었습니다.
그래서 채택한 것이 기존의 배럴 재료를 교체하는 것이었는데, 그것은 영국 왕립 화학회에서 개발한, "plexiglas"라는 이 합성수지(훗날 아크릴 혹은 "lucite" 라 불리게 됨)였습니다.
이것은 기존 재료인 셀룰로이드에 비하여, 강하고, 치밀하여 흡수가 잘 안되고, 열에 강한 장점이 있었습니다.
이 소재는 비행기의 창문등에 사용되던 신소재로서 당시로서는 대단히 획기적인 기술이기도 했습니다.

세번째로 디자인의 혁신입니다.
51의 특징적인 디자인은 닙이 배럴에 대부분 감추어져 있고, 끝만 조금 나온 형태입니다.
앞서 말한 신소재를 적극 활용한 디자인입니다. 닙부분에서의 증발을 최대한 막은 것입니다.

네번째로 끊이지 않는 관심과 인기입니다.
단종된지 30여년이 지났는데도, 2000년 파커사가 51을 재생산하려고 한다는 소문이 돌자 수많은 펜 애호가들 사이에 헛소문이나 아니다 하는 논쟁이 급속도로 번졌습니다.
이것은 얼마나 51이라는 모델이 사랑받았는가를 단적으로 말해줍니다.
드디어 2002년, 파커 51은 다시 태어나게 됩니다.
아마 만년필 역사상 이토록 사랑받았던 제품이 있었을까요?

51은 1941년 당시 가격으로 12.5달러 였다고 합니다. 현재의 화폐가치로 환산한다면, 대략 140달러 정도라고 하는데, 환율을 1200으로 환산하면, 17만원 정도 하는 셈입니다.
51의 또다른 특징으로는 제조국가가 무척 다양하다는 것을 들 수 있는데, 어떤 것은 남미의 아르헨티나에서 남아프리카 공화국까지 있을 정도입니다.
이것은 시간이 지나면서 부품과 제조를 다국적으로 하였기 때문이기도 한데, 일부 악덕 상인들에 의해 가짜가 나돌기도 했습니다.
게다가 생산기지가 없는 나라에서 제작된 51까지 나돌기도 했습니다.
이것은 곧 51의 인기를 반영하는 것이기도 합니다.

51은 비교적 변화가 적은 모델에 속합니다.
그 중에서 특징적인 것은 1941년 이전, 1941년, 1941년 이후라고 할 수 있습니다.
왜 하필 최초 생산연도인 1941년이 문제가 되었느냐하면, 1939년에 이미 시험제품이 나오기 시작했기 때문입니다.
이 시험제품은 곧 출시가 중단되었는데, filler가 알루미늄으로 되어 있었습니다.
이것은 후에 전쟁이 일어나면서, 물자의 부족 때문에 곧 플라스틱으로 대체되게 됩니다.
1941년 제품은 캡과 배럴의 끝에 각각 보석이 박혀 있으며, 배럴에 제작과 관련된 날짜의 코드가 표기되었습니다.
이것은 1942년에 제작한 지역 표시로 바뀌게 됩니다.

(그렇다고 완전히 진공펌프식이 사라진 것은 아니다. 일명 'Demi'로 불리는 일부 제품중에서 이어져 내려오기도 했습니다.)
1972년 : 단종됨
2002년 : Special Edition으로 새롭게 부활함.

ㆍ규칙적 운동·수면 필요… 예방용 한약 주목

많은 사람들을 대하는 교회 목사 이모씨(46)는 언제부터인가 신도들의 얼굴과 이름을 외우기가 힘들어졌다. 건망증 탓이려니 쉽게 생각했지만, 나이가 들어가면서 점점 심해질 수 있다는 생각에 걱정이 많아졌다. 전문가들은 기억력은 정상인이라도 나이가 들어감에 따라 저하될 수 있는 정상적인 노화과정 가운데 하나로 본다. 그러나 최근 한의학에서 기억력이 급격히 저하되는 노년층, 많은 사람을 대하는 사람들에게 효과가 있는 한약이 개발되기도 했으며, 규칙적인 운동 등 생활습관을 통해서도 머리를 건강하게 할 수 있다고 전문가들은 조언하고 있다.

뇌도 학습하고 스트레스 피해야 건강

인간은 학습을 받으면 어떤 개념이나 대상을 머릿속 어딘가에 저장하도록 되어 있다. 저장되어 있는 정보는 필요에 따라 인출해 사용하게 되는데 이 과정을 기억이라고 한다. 이 같은 정보는 종류별로 나뉘어 어떤 정보는 잠시 기억됐다가 사라지고, 반대로 오랫동안 기억되는 정보가 있을 수 있다. 경희의료원 한방신경정신과 황의완 교수는 “그간 보고된 연구에 따르면 이 같은 현상은 뇌의 전두엽과 부해마피질이 오래 작동하면 그 사물이 기억되고, 짧게 작동하면 잊어버리는 것으로 보고되고 있다”고 말했다.

그중 잊어버리는 원인을 심리학적으로 밝히는 연구는 여러 학설이 제기되고 있지만 쇠퇴이론과 간섭이론이 일반적이다. 쇠퇴이론은 학습된 정보가 사용되지 않으면 망각이 일어난다는 것. 즉 머리도 연습을 하지 않으면 점점 쇠퇴해간다는 의미로도 해석될 수 있다. 간섭이론은 망각이 단순한 시간의 경과에 의해서가 아니라 주변 간섭으로 인해서 잊어버린다는 것이다. 여기에는 스트레스 등이 주변 간섭에 해당될 수 있다. 황 교수는 “건망증을 예방하기 위해서는 지속적 학습을 하는 것이 좋다”며 “또한 스트레스를 해소하는 것도 기억력을 향상시키는 데 도움이 된다”고 말했다. 그러나 황 교수는 “섣불리 건망증이라고 판단하기보다는 의사의 진찰을 통해 정확한 원인을 평가하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다”고 말했다. 치매의 경우 일반적인 알츠하이머 치매나 혈관성 치매의 경우 초기에 발견해 치료를 시작하는 것이 좋으며, 기타 원인질환이 존재하는 치매의 경우 그 원인질환을 치료해야 한다. 우울증의 경우 적절한 상담치료와 약물치료를 병행해야 한다.

기억력 저하 예방 한약복합물 개발돼

기억력이 급격히 저하되는 노년층을 비롯한 기억력이 필요한 수험생에게 효과가 있는 한약이 개발됐다. 경희대학교 한의과대학 본초학교실 김호철 교수와 경희의료원 한방신경정신과 황의완 교수, 동서신의학병원 한방신경정신과 김종우 교수팀은 자체 개발한 한약복합물(HT 008-1)이 기억력 향상에 효과가 있다는 연구결과를 얻었다고 밝혔다.

한약복합물(HT008-1)은 인삼, 가시오가피, 당귀, 황금 등 동의보감에 있는 한약재 200여종을 선발해 일정비율로 배합한 추출물이다. 연구팀은 한약복합물을 기억력 저하를 호소하는 중년남성 118명에게 투여한 뒤 8주 후 기억력을 측정했다. 그 결과 한약복합물을 복용한 사람은 그렇지 않은 사람에 비해 기억력 점수가 최대 2배 이상 상승한 것으로 조사됐으며, 삶의 질도 상승한 것으로 나타났다. 교육과학기술부의 21세기 프런티어 사업으로 진행된 이번 연구는 이 분야 권위지인 ‘약리생화학행동학회지’ 최근호에 게재됐다. 김호철 교수는 “건망증이 치매로 진행되는 것은 아니지만 일상생활에서 불편감을 가져오고, 치매로 오해하는 등의 불안감을 증가 시킬 수 있다”며 “이번 임상실험에 사용된 한약물이 이러한 불편감과 불안감을 감소시켜 중년 이후 삶의 질을 향상시킬 수 있을 것으로 기대된다”고 밝혔다.

생활 속에서 기억력 좋아지는 방법은

동서신의학병원 한방신경정신과 김종우 교수는 머리가 좋아지는 방법으로 규칙성을 꼽았다. 규칙적인 운동과 규칙적인 수면 습관은 머리를 맑게 해준다. 또 평상시 일기 쓰기, 한자 익히기, 가계부 쓰기 등 여러 종류의 취미생활을 통해 머리를 쓰는 것도 좋다. 반면 부정적인 사고를 피하고 되도록 밝은 마음으로 웃으면서 생활하는 것이 좋다. 밝은 마음은 신경회로가 원활해져 사고의 흐름이 촉진되기 때문이다. 스트레스 해소나 기분 전환을 위해서 클래식 등 음악을 듣는 것도 좋다. 그러나 굳이 클래식만 들을 필요는 없다. 자기 취양에 맞는 음악을 듣고 작곡가에 대한 연구를 하는 등의 논리적 요소를 생각하는 것이 중요하기 때문이다. 주변사람과의 만남도 늘리는 것이 좋다. 단 가족, 친구 등 평소 긴장 없이 만나는 사람은 효과가 없으니 다양한 사람과 만나는 것을 권한다. 뇌도 무리하면 힘든 법, 뇌를 혹사하는 직업인은 머리를 자주 쉬어주는 것이 좋다. 또 이들의 경우 여러가지 일을 한꺼번에 처리하는 것을 삼가야 한다. 뇌의 기억은 교통과 같기 때문에 길이 복잡해지면 기억을 끄집어 내는 데 어려움을 겪는다. 마치 교통체증과 같은 현상이 발생할 수 있다. 암기가 필요한 수험생들은 단순 암기보다는 이해를 통한 암기가 도움이 된다. 또 소화기능이 떨어지게 되면 생각을 잘하기 어렵고 또 기억력에도 영향을 주기에 소화능력에도 관심을 갖는 것이 좋다.

Asia, too, feels the pain

Can a region like Asia - with more than $3 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, high savings rates, mostly well-capitalized banks and minimal exposure to American mortgage-backed securities - run into trouble during a global financial crisis?

The answer Friday was a resounding yes.

Stock markets plunged from Tokyo to Mumbai. Real estate prices are tumbling from Seoul to New Delhi. The economy in Singapore has tipped into recession, and there is growing evidence of a recession in Japan, where an unlisted insurer and a real estate investment trust filed for bankruptcy Friday.

From UBS to Morgan Stanley, investment banks have been warning in the past week of a global economic downturn. For Asia, that sounds uncomfortably like a forecast that economic slowdowns in the United States and Europe will cripple demand for Asia's exports and pull the region down into recession as well.

What went wrong? As the biggest beneficiary of the rise in global trade, Asia depends heavily on exports to the West. Everything from corporate earnings to real estate prices depends on a steady inflow of dollars and euros.

Growth in exports has slowed to a crawl or started declining across most of the region when calculated in local currency terms and adjusted for inflation. And that is even before Western stores have had a chance to cut back their orders in response to the sort of steep declines in sales that American retailers announced on Wednesday.

India announced Friday that industrial production in August was 1.3 percent higher than a year earlier. That was a drastic deceleration from July, when the growth rate was 7.4 percent.

In Korea, exporters are suddenly struggling.

"The problem is the global recession - people don't buy consumer electronics, this means less exports and fewer dollars for us," said Choi Hae Pyong, an electronics parts manufacturer south of Seoul. "It's like walking in a thick fog."

As long as the region kept exporting and kept saving the proceeds, investors bid up real estate and share prices that now seem to have a long way to fall.

Matthew Au, a luxury real estate broker in Hong Kong, said that this past week had been even worse than the days after the Tiananmen Square killings on June 4, 1989, which briefly shattered business confidence here.

"I've been through June 4th, the 1997 financial crises and SARS, but this time around, the decline in housing prices has been the most abrupt," he said. "Sellers of properties are now more willing to consider offers which come in 20 to 30 percent below their asking prices."

As global financial markets increasingly look to each other for direction, lack of confidence in financial institutions and housing markets in the West has also proved contagious in Asia. The Asian news media, often focused on economics instead of potentially touchy political issues, have been full of reports in the past three weeks about failing banks and falling real estate prices, and that has fed through into local markets.

An outflow of Western investment has also played a role in Asia's decline now, although foreign investment has become less important in much of the region as Asia has become a formidable saver in its own right.

In Malaysia, foreign investors held nearly a third of Malaysia's national debt until they started selling this summer to raise money so as to cover losses in other markets.

In Korea, foreign investors sold $29 billion in the first nine months of this year. This was an important reason why the country's foreign exchange reserves have slipped to a still formidable $239.7 billion last month from $264.2 billion in March.

Many in Asia now despair of help from the West, and are looking to Beijing.

"The United States is beyond saving - our only hope rests with China," said Dick Chen, a middle-aged manager in a pin striped blue shirt and carrying an ultraslim modern mobile phone who watched the markets with dismay after lunch in a trading room of Tai Fook Securities in Hong Kong.

Can China save Asia? For the past six years, the Chinese economy has been like an enormously powerful hound that has charged ahead despite every obstacle. Worried that the economy may overheat and accelerate inflation, Beijing officials have run a budget surplus, repeatedly raised interest rates and even required banks to deposit a remarkable one-sixth of their entire assets as reserves at the central bank to slow lending.

Now Beijing is trying to loosen the leash it has had on the economy by cutting interest rates and taxes and lowering reserve requirements. But the government is finding the economy already looks a little out of breath as exports slow.

Economists see annual growth slowing from 12 percent a year ago to 8 or 9 percent this winter. That is still respectable by most countries' standards, but a shock for many Chinese, particularly workers losing their jobs in factories producing mainly for export markets.

For Asia, this is the crisis that was never supposed to happen again.

The region was deeply scarred by the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and 1998.

Dozens of banks failed after lending too much with too little capital, while profligate governments found that they had borrowed too much overseas and could not repay their debts.

That led to a rapid contraction of credit that bankrupted many industrial companies and caused a steep decline in economic output and a surge in unemployment - the same fate that may now await the United States and Europe, many economists and investors fear.

Southeast Asian economies have never entirely recovered. After a drop of nearly 10 percent on Friday, the main index of the Thai stock market closed at 452, a quarter of its high in 1994.

Most of Asia emerged from that crisis with more cautious banks, stricter financial regulation, a tighter rein on government spending and a strong determination to accumulate. But while Asia broke its dependence on capital flows from the West, the dependence on exports remained.

Yet Asia's frugality over the past decade has given the region a lot more room to maneuver than most Western countries.

South Korea and India are often cited by economists as the two most vulnerable economies in Asia.

South Korea is drawing attention because its trade deficit, by the broadest measure possible, was $4.7 billion in August, after mostly surpluses before that. Korean exports of manufactured goods have slumped even as the cost of its oil-dominated imports have surged - although falling oil prices now will help.

The South Korean won showed the steepest decline of any Asian currency against the dollar on Friday morning, falling more than 3 percent.

But the won soared on Friday afternoon, with a gain for the day of 6.3 percent. The reason? Widespread rumors that the government would start spending part of the country's huge foreign exchange reserves to prop up the won.

The South Korean government only owes $334 million in foreign debt repayments by the end of next year, or 0.14 percent of foreign exchange reserves, according to a recent study of emerging market debt by ING. Big Korean exporters like Samsung, hobbled for lack of foreign currency reserves in 1997, have hoarded formidable reserves of dollars.

Corporate debt repayments are a little larger, and also harder to calculate. But since all of Asia only owes $31 billion in debt repayments through the end of last year, South Korea's share is tiny relative to its foreign reserves.

India was one of the few countries in Asia to escape the financial crisis a decade ago, because it was just starting to embrace international markets then. It did not adopt the same tight bank regulatory standards and tough fiscal policies as the rest of Asia after that crisis.

That has prompted some economists, like Ajay Kapur at Mirae Asset and Takahira Ogawa at Standard and Poor's, to express particular concern about India's preparedness for the current crisis. While India has $295.3 billion in foreign exchange reserves, it is running a large government budget deficit and a large trade deficit while its banks have lent very aggressively to a real estate sector that is now tumbling quickly.

With an election expected early next year, Indian leaders have been much more upbeat about their country's prospects than most Asian leaders.

Policy makers in India have also subscribed to the idea that their economy has "decoupled" from Western economies, an idea that most economists and policy makers in Asia rejected many months ago.

"India is not from any other planet," said a posting on an Indian web site this week. "This common logic is ignored by our policy makers."

고시용 필기구로서 요구되는 조건은 일단...

1) 그립감이 좋고 편해서 손에 무리가 가지 않아야 한다. → 요건 개인마다 다 다르기 때문에 뭐라 할 말은 없습니다.

2) 색상이 진하고 선명해야 한다. → 고시 답안지는 복사기로 복사해서 채점을 하기 때문에 복사기로 복사를 했을 때 글씨가 선명하게 나와야 합니다. 그래서 잉크가 얼만큼 진하고 선명하냐도 고시생들이 많이 고려합니다.

3) 필기시 끊김이 없어야 한다 → 요건 아주아주 중요한 조건입니다. 일단 초안지에 목차를 잡고나면 그 다음부턴 머리에 꽃을 단 아가씨가 널을 뛰듯이 정신없이 갈겨쓰기 시작해야 하는데 그럴 때 잉크가 뚝뚝 끊어지기 시작하면 답안작성의 흐름이 끊기고 신경질이라도 나기 시작하면 답장작성에 애로사항이 좀 많습니다. 이건 전적으로 필기구의 성능문제인데 이것이 고시생들에게 국산필기구들이 간택되지 못하는 이유이기도 하죠. 이 문제는 만년필도 마찬가지일 것 같습니다.

특히 세필 만년필은 잉크의 흐름이 많지 않기 때문에 글씨를 계속 쓰면서 펜촉이 마른다고나 할까요... 잉크의 흐름이 필기속도를 따라오지 못하는 경우가 있었습니다.

4) 가격 부담이 덜해야 합니다. → 극한 상황에서 최고의 성능이 요구되면서도 역설적으로 가격이 비싸면 부담스러울 수 밖에 없습니다. 필기량이 많기 때문에 소모량도 많을 수 밖에 없고, 만년필이라도 그거 하나 딸랑 들고 들어갔다간 피눈물을 흘릴 수 있습니다. 답장 작성 중에 잉크가 다 떨어진다거나, 바닥에 떨어져서 망가진다거나 했을 때를 대비해서 여분으로 한두 자루 정도는 더 갖고 있어야 합니다.

고시용 만년필이라면 필기구로서 극한의 상황에서 신뢰할 수 있는 성능을 유지할 수 있는, 연약한 어린 아이나 거동이 느긋한 어르신 같은 펜이 아니라 전쟁터에 내보낼 수 있는 씩씩한 청년같은 만년필이어야 합니다.

그래서 일단 생각나는 펜 몇자루는.. (그리고 강의실에서 봤던 수험생들의 펜.)

펠리칸 m200부터 m800까지. 배럴이 잉크저장통 역할을 해서 잉크가 많이 들어가는게 강점!
m400,600시리즈>>> m200> m800

라미 3만원대 모델들. 촉이 스뎅인데도 금촉처럼 소프트한 필감을 준다. 잉크흐름이 뛰어난듯 함.

일본브랜드 세일러나 빠이롯, 플래티넘은 너무 세필에 낭창거려서 비추.
몽블랑은 살짝 무거운 모델들이 대부분이고 글씨체가 매우 두껍게 나옴. 글씨가 굵직굵직한 사람이라면 추천하겠지만.. 일반적이지 않다.

[첨단무기시리즈] 글로벌 호크가 탐나는 세가지 이유

미국은 ‘판다, 안 판다’는 입장을 번복해 가며 글로벌 호크를 한미 국방외교의 ‘미끼’처럼 활용한다. 우리 당국과 미묘한 줄다리기를 벌이고 있다. 도대체 글로벌 호크가 뭐 길래?
전문가들이 분석하는 ‘글로벌 호크가 탐나는 세 가지 이유’를 들어보자.

첫째, 가장 높이 난다.

인공위성을 통해 조종되는 무인 정찰기 글로벌 호크의 작전 고도는 20km다. 이는 성층권이다. 인공위성 바로 아래에서 지상을 내려다 본다. 성층권 하단부를 나는 여객기의 고도가 12km임을 감안한다면 정말 까마득한 높이다. 전투기의 고고도 훈련도 최고 10~12km에서 이뤄진다. 높다는 것은 넓게 본다는 장점이 있다. 중요한 것은 고도가 워낙 높아 적으로부터 공격을 받지 않는다. 지구상 어떤 전투기도 이 정도 높이에서 요격임무를 수행하기 힘들다. F-15의 경우 한계고도를 20km로 잡고 있지만 산소가 희박해 엔진 효율이 떨어진다. 올라가자마자 다시 재급유를 받으러 내려와야 한다. 설사 요격이 가능하다 하더라도 글로벌 호크의 레이다에 먼저 잡힌다. 미사일도 마찬가지다. 이 정도 높이에 있는 글로벌 호크를 명중시키는 미사일은 거의 없다. 설사 있다 하더라도 올라오는 동안 레이다 포착된다. 자리를 피하면 그만이다. 비싼 미사일만 날리게 된다. 한때 비슷한 고도에서 작전을 펼치던 미국의 정찰기 U2가 구소련의 미사일에 맞아 떨어지는 경우가 있었지만 첨단 레이다로 무장한 글로벌호크와는 경우가 다르다.

둘째, 가장 오래 난다.

미국의 주요 방산업체인 노드롭 그루만사가 생산하는 글로벌호크는 2001년 3월21일 뉴멕시코에 있는 미군 화이트샌드 미사일레인지에서 30시간 24분을 비행해 무인기 부분 세계 최장 비행 기록을 세운 바 있다. FAI 기록원이 현장에 없어 비공인기록으로 남게 됐지만 현존하는 정찰기 중 가장 오래 나는 기종임에는 틀림없다(무인기 최장비행기록은 미국 QinetiQ’사의 초경량 태양열전지비행기 Zephyr의 54시간이다. 그러나 이 UAV는 실험기다).

글로벌호크(RQ-4)의 동체길이는 14.5m지만 날개폭은 39.9m다. 날개가 동체에 비해 3배 정도 길다. 그만큼 비행효율이 높다. 작전거리에 따라 다르지만 최고 35시간을 날수 있다. 약 5000km 범위의 작전거리에서 24시간 이상 비행하며 정찰활동을 할 수 있다. 가장 높은 곳에서, 가장 오래 또 자세히 본다. 인공위성도 자세히 보지만 오래보지는 못한다. 궤도에 따라 돌기 때문에 금방 지나간다. 첩보위성의 주기를 알면 얼마든지 적에게 노출되는 것을 피할 수 있는 것이다.

그러나 글로벌 호크 서너 대만 있으면 교대로 떠서 일년 내내 북한 전역을 손바닥 보듯이 들여다 볼 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.

미사일이 닿지 않는 높은 위치에서 하루가 넘도록 들여다보고 있으니 당하는 쪽은 애만 탈 뿐이다. ‘지붕 쳐다보는 개’ 꼴이 된다. 감추고 싶은 ‘속살’을 보일 수밖에 없는 것이다.

셋째, 가장 자세히 본다.

글로벌 호크의 ‘눈’이라고 할 수 있는 SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar-합성개구레이다, 레이온사 제작)의 최고 해상도는 30cm로 첨단 첩보위성과 맞먹는다. SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar)은 항공기나 인공위성 등에 탑재해 이동하면서 목표물에 레이다를 쏘아 이에 부딪쳐 반사되는 레이다 신호를 컴퓨터 등을 이용해 분석, 합성한 뒤 영상으로 합성해 주는 최첨단 관측 장비다. 레이저 파를 이용하기 때문에 구름을 뚫고 촬영이 가능하다. 낮밤도 관계없다. 우리나라가 2006년 발사에 성공한 무궁화5호 위성의 해상도가 1m인 점을 감안하면 세배 이상의 높은 해상도다.

글로벌 호크의 SAR은 세가지 모드가 있다. 30cm의 물체를 1개의 점으로 표시하는 고해상도 스폿모드로는 24시간 동안 7,600평방킬로미터에 이르는 지역을 촬영할 수 있다. 또 1m해상도인 광역탐색 모드(Wide Area Search mode)를 사용하면 24시간이면 138,000평방킬로미터의 지역을 촬영 할 수 있다. 북한의 면적이 122,762평방킬로미터이므로 하루 만에 북한 전역을 1m해상도 사진으로 촬영하고도 남는다.

글로벌 호크의 SAR은 이동표적추적모드(Moving Target Indicator mode)도 있는데 이 방식을 이용하면 1분 안에 15,000평방미터 지역에서 시속 7.5km이상으로 움직이는 모든 표적을 탐지할 수 있다. 가장 높은 곳에서, 가장 오래, 가장 자세히 보는 글로벌 호크. 대당 720억원에 달하는 금액이 아깝지 않은 지구상 최고의 정찰기다.

결론은, 몇대 사뒀으면 좋겠다 ㅋㅋㅋ

버핏 “내 성공은 5명의 여성 덕분”

“공허한 마음을 채워주고 나를 돌봐준 것은 여성들이었다.”

‘투자의 귀재’라고 불리는 워런 버핏(사진) 버크셔해서웨이 회장이 29일 출간되는 자서전 ‘스노볼(눈 덩이): 워런 버핏과 인생경영’에서 자신에게 큰 영향을 끼친 여성 5명을 소개했다고 시사주간 타임 인터넷판이 23일 전했다.

어머니의 사랑을 받지 못했던 그를 처음으로 어루만져 준 여성은 첫 아내 수전. 결혼 당시만 해도 버핏 회장은 대인 관계에 어려움을 겪을 정도로 원만한 성격이 아니었다.

그는 일에만 매달렸다. 수전은 남편이 800만∼1000만 달러를 모으면 가족의 품으로 돌아올 것으로 생각했지만 버핏 회장의 일 욕심은 끝이 없었다.

결국 수전은 자녀들이 장성한 뒤 1977년 남편 곁을 떠났다. 이혼은 하지 않은 채 27년 동안 따로 살았다. 버핏 회장은 이 일을 인생 최대의 실수라고 후회했다. “식사도 제대로 못하고 옷도 못 챙겨 입을 정도”로 혼란스러웠다.

이후 버핏 회장은 수전이 구강암에 걸렸다는 소식에 몇 시간 동안 목 놓아 울었다. 수전이 암 치료로 죽밖에 먹지 못하자 자신도 하루 식사량을 1000kcal로 줄였다. 버핏 회장은 수전 사망(2004년) 2년 뒤 애스트리드 멩크스와 재혼한다. 멩크스는 수전이 남편을 돌봐줄 것을 부탁했던 여성.

워싱턴포스트의 발행인이었던 고 캐서린 그레이엄도 버핏 회장에게 빼놓을 수 없는 인물. 그레이엄은 버핏 회장이 상류사회에 들어갈 수 있도록 이끌어줬다. 버핏 회장은 그레이엄에게 사업과 투자에 대해 가르치며 서로의 부족한 부분을 채웠다.

이 밖에 버핏 회장의 브리지 게임(카드의 일종) 친구였던 샤론 오스버그는 버핏 회장에게 컴퓨터 사용을 적극 권유했고 경제주간지 포천 편집장이었던 캐럴 루미스는 버핏 회장이 주주들에게 매년 편지 쓰는 것을 도왔다.

Une tour pyramidale à Paris

Un projet privé de tour de bureaux porte de Versailles, dans le XVe arrondissement de Paris, a été présenté aujourd'hui par le maire de Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, alors que le Conseil de Paris est divisé sur la construction de tels édifices. Cette tour d'une hauteur de 150 à 180 mètres sera une pyramide très effilée construite par le promoteur Unibail, à partir des plans de l'agence suisse Herzog et de Meuron sur le site du Parc des expositions. Il s'agira de la première tour construite dans Paris intra muros depuis la tour Montparnasse, 210 mètres, il y a une trentaine d'années.

Encore des bureaux !? Il y a des centaines de beaux immeubles haussmanniens ou autres monuments à restaurer ou à entretenir correctement, des milliers d'appartements ou de bureaux inoccupés dans Paris, pourquoi construire encore un truc inadapté, qui vieillira mal, très cher à l'entretien et pas en adéquation avec le charme de Paris.

Dans les années 70 les architectes d'alors s'en sont donné à coeur joie avec leur Ville nouvelles, expression du génie architectural du moment... 40 ans après elles sont le symbole de l'inhumanité et de ce qu'il ne faut pas faire....

Question: Qu'en aurait il été si elles avaient été construite dans Paris, comme le Corbusier voulait le faire aux Halles...? On aurait défiguré Paris. On aurait eu droit à des "Désolé on ne savait pas de la part des coupables...." Maintenant on sait.

Quelle arrogance que de vouloir défigurer ce qui existe déjà, un peu comme la tour montparnasse le fait au milieu de Paris... Pourquoi détruire ce que les autres ont fait? In South Korea, the good life is a full-service bathhouse

When Koreans evoke the good life, they often talk of a "warm back and full stomach."

Nowhere has the Korean penchant for finding a hot floor to lie on (a feature of every traditional house) and eating one's fill found fuller expression than in the jjimjilbang, the 24-hour-a-day public bathhouse.

But calling the jjimjilbang a bathhouse hardly begins to describe its attractions.

"Here, you take a bath and a sauna. But you can also eat, sleep, date, watch television, read, play computer games. It's one-stop total service in the Korean way of relaxing," said Kim Eun Yeong, 40, who teaches Japanese at Hanyang University in Seoul.

On this day, Kim was relaxing at World Cup Spaland, one of the city's largest jjimjilbang. She had just crawled out of an igloo-shaped room. Inside, on a pile of snow-white rock salt huddled a dozen men and women, all clad in identical yellow T-shirts and shorts. The temperature inside the room, appropriately called a kiln, was 100 degrees Celsius (212 Fahrenheit).

Before moving on to other forms of jjimjil, or saunas, Kim was taking a breather in a large common area with a heated floor. Beads of sweat rolled down her face.

Sprawled about her were men, women and children, some asleep, their heads resting on wooden block pillows. Others were watching a soap opera on a wall-hung TV. Kim's 9-year-old son, Cho Yoon Geun, was reading a comic book.

"My family comes here at least once a month," Kim said. "When my friends and I want to get together, we say, 'Let's meet at a jjimjilbang.' We even held our school reunion here."

Although Korean villagers had long bathed in streams, the first public bathhouse was not built until 1925, mostly to cater to Japanese colonialists. The institution quickly became part of Korean social life. Most neighborhoods had one. Inside, patrons sat in or around large, sex-segregated baths filled with scalding water, gossiping and scooping water with gourds. Scrubbing other bathers' backs, even strangers', was common practice.

Being taken to a public bath for a no-nonsense scrub by their mothers until skin turned pink and eyes welled with tears is every Korean adult's childhood memory. (Sometimes arguments broke out in the women's tub if a boy was considered too old to be there.)

But the bathhouse's fortunes declined in recent decades as Koreans began outfitting their homes with showers. So they evolved, adding steam rooms and hiring professional body scrubbers. Then they added barbers and hair salons, and eventually sleeping rooms, where harried salary-earners could shower and nap during the day.

By the late 1990s, many of them had turned into jjimjilbang recreation complexes, as much a part of Korean social life as going to the movies. In 2006, there were more than 13,400 in the country, including 2,779 in Seoul. Some can accommodate thousands of people at once.

Because they are open around the clock, and relatively inexpensive, they have attracted budget-minded travelers. Some have long-term guests. Recently the government banned minors from jjimjilbang without an adult escort between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. after it was reported that they were becoming havens for runaways.

At the front counter, customers pay about 8,000 won, or $7, pick up their top and shorts and a towel and enter the sex-segregated bath halls. There, for an extra fee, they can be scrubbed. The customer lies on a table clad in nothing but soapsuds, as a scrubber with exfoliating mitts scrapes down his or her body, flipping it over with the dexterity of a fishmonger.

From the bathing halls, patrons of both sexes step out into what looks like a hotel lobby, giant living room and shopping mall combined. Here, people dressed in the identical top and shorts are sitting or lying on the communal heated floor or roaming about.

Mothers indulge themselves at the beauty salon. Fathers huff on treadmills or nap in the "oxygen room." Young couples lie side by side on the floor watching movies in the video room. Teenage boys bang away at keyboards in the Internet game room. Some jjimjilbang have karaoke rooms, concert halls, swimming pools, even indoor golf ranges. When hunger strikes, patrons go to the cafeteria, where, again, they sit on a heated floor as they eat.

But a jjimjilbang's reputation owes much to its sauna theme rooms.

In heated huts permeated with the aroma of mugwort (important in traditional medicine), patrons sit in silence, concentrating on the act of sweating. Sometimes the walls are studded with stones - jade, amethyst - that many Koreans believe emit healing rays when heated.

Koreans often say they are drawn to a jjimjilbang because they miss the ondol, the heated floor Korean families slept on until they began moving to high-rise apartments and Western-style beds.

Traditionally, Korean fathers liked to take their sons, and mothers their daughters, to bathhouses. Rubbing each other's backs has been a time-honored way of building parent-child bonds. Unlike the old bathhouses, which had no common area for men and women, jjimjilbang bring the whole family together.

"We don't consider someone a real friend until we take a bath together," said Han Jae Kwan, 25, a college student.

His girlfriend, Yang Eun Jeong, agreed: "We women also believe we become closer when we get naked and bathe together."

The two were playing the board game Go after emerging from the sauna. Since most young Koreans live with their parents until they marry, jjimjilbang have become popular places for couples to spend time together.

"We often come here on a date," Han said. "At a café, the owner gives you an unwelcome look after a few hours if you don't order more. But here, you can stay as long as you want."

Yang winces at some scenes in the jjimjilbang: young couples kissing, or the girl sleeping with her head on her boyfriend's arm, in a room full of strangers.

Snoring is another problem, when people doze off on the heated floor. So are the potential complications of so many people sleeping together.

"At night, many different families sleep on the same large floor," said Kim, the Japanese instructor. "Sometimes, they get mixed up while they're sleeping. It can be embarrassing."

New Jerusalem vehicle "attack" as Livni seeks govt

A Palestinian rammed his car into a group of Israeli soldiers in Jerusalem on Monday, hours after Foreign Minster Tzipi Livni agreed to try to form a new government that can avert an election and forge a peace deal.

The man, who neighbours said lived in Jerusalem, was shot dead after injuring 15 of the soldiers and four others, under the walls of the Old City on a road that marks the dividing "Green Line" between Arab East Jerusalem and the Jewish west.

Police described it as a "terrorist" attack, the third of its kind using vehicles against Israelis in the city since July. There was no immediately credible claim of responsibility.

It highlighted the security problems Livni faces as she seeks to build a workable government following the resignation of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert over a corruption scandal.

It is far from certain she will succeed in building a new coalition and failure may well mean a parliamentary election, which polls indicate would favour the right-wing opposition.

Two of those hurt were in a serious condition, medics said.

A police spokesman said a soldier and then a policeman fired at the driver. He lay dead in the road by his black BMW car.

"It was a terror attack," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, adding that a soldier and a policeman shot the driver.

The soldiers were on a late-night educational tour of the city ahead of next week's celebration of the Jewish New Year.

Dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews gathered nearby. Some chanted "Death to Arabs". Police fired tear gas to disperse them.

Twice in July, Palestinian construction workers using earthmoving equipment attacked Israelis in Jerusalem, in one case killing three. Both were shot dead.

JERUSALEM DISPUTE.

In both those incidents, the drivers were Palestinians with Israeli identity documents giving them free access to Israel and Jerusalem. Residents in the Arab east of the city identified the man killed on Monday as a neighbour with similar documents.

The earlier incidents, as well as a shooting attack in March in which eight Jewish seminary students were killed, prompted calls in Israel for restrictions on Palestinians living on the Israeli side of the barrier Israel is building around the West Bank.

Those areas, in East Jerusalem and neighbouring parts of the West Bank, were annexed by Israel to Jerusalem in a move not recognised internationally, following their occupation by Israeli forces in the Six Day War of 1967.

The future status of Jerusalem, where both Israelis and Palestinians want to have their capitals, is a key issue in U.S.-sponsored negotiations that Livni and Olmert have been conducting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

After President Shimon Peres invited her to form a new government, Livni called on her right-wing opponents to join a unity coalition that would embrace the political spectrum.

There was no indication, however, that Benjamin Netanyahu, the former premier who leads the opposition Likud party, would drop his demand for an early parliamentary election instead -- an election which opinion polls suggest he could win with ease.

Livni was elected last week to succeed Olmert as leader of the centrist Kadima party, after he said he would quit to fight accusations of corruption over which he could be indicted.

The 50-year-old commercial lawyer and one-time agent of the Mossad spy agency, faces a daunting struggle to build a workable parliamentary majority from among the 13 parties represented in the Knesset. Until she does, Olmert will remain as caretaker.

"My priorities are to try and form a national unity government and maintain the present coalition," she told a news conference after meeting Peres on Monday evening. "Otherwise I will lead the Knesset to new elections as soon as possible."

If Livni cannot win parliamentary approval within six weeks, an election is the likely outcome. If she succeeds, she will be Israel's first woman leader since Golda Meir in the 1970s.

Livni has been in consultations across the spectrum, notably with Labour party leader Ehud Barak, whose leftist party is the second biggest in the outgoing government, and with the Jewish religious parties which always play a key role in coalitions.

The political uncertainty has dimmed even further prospects of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, which the United States had hoped Olmert and Abbas could achieve this year before President George W. Bush leaves office.

Disgraced SKorean scientist to get cloning patent

Australian officials are expected to grant a patent this week to a disgraced South Korean scientist for his disputed technology on cloning human embryos, a move that his supporters say would vindicate his work.

Hwang Woo-suk's purported breakthroughs in cloning stem cells raised hopes for developing cures to diseases such as Alzheimer's, but they were deemed fraudulent in 2005 when a key paper on the technology was found to have fake data.

He continued to insist that his technology worked, and his team later applied for patents in some 10 countries.

Australian patent authorities decided earlier this year to give Hwang the patent, and in June issued a call for any opposition to the move. There has been no opposition and the deadline for input expires this week, according to Hwang's SooAm Biotech Research Foundation in South Korea.

An official with the Australian patent agency, IP Australia, confirmed that there had been no opposition to the application and that the patent was to be granted Thursday. She declined to give her name, saying she was not authorized to speak to media.

IP Australia said it would explain later Tuesday why it decided to grant the patent.

"This shows that Hwang's achievements, disparaged at home, are being acknowledged abroad. The truth is becoming known," said SooAm adviser Hyun Sang-hwan, who also works as a veterinary professor at Chungbuk National University in South Korea.

Australia would be the first country to grant Hwang a patent in his work in the controversial field of human cloning. The patent would mean anyone in Australia using Hwang's technology to produce medicine must pay royalty, said Kim Soon-woong, a patent agent for SooAm.

His former Seoul National University team said it successfully created the world's first known cloned dog in 2005, and that achievement was independently confirmed.

Lyle Armstrong, a stem cell biology expert at the Institute of Human Genetics at Britain's Newcastle University, said Australia may have scientific reasons for patenting Hwang's technology. He said newer methods of cloning human embryos have been developed since Hwang's claim of a breakthrough but are far more expensive.

However, "there will always be a doubt in the minds of scientists around the world: He faked it before — what's he doing now?" he said Monday.

Hwang and his former colleagues at Seoul National University had claimed in a 2004 paper in the journal Science that they had produced a human embryo through cloning — and recovered stem cells from it.

Scientists say stem cells are key to developing cures to diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, but they are difficult to produce. Hwang was the first scientist to claim success in extracting stem cells from an embryo.

In 2005, Hwang claimed in Science that he had created human embryonic stem cells genetically matched to specific patients, a technique that would have been a breakthrough because of the cell's ability to withstand rejection by the patient's immune system.

However, a Seoul National University committee later declared the 2005 paper a fraud after finding faked data, and also cast doubt on his 2004 paper. Science later withdrew Hwang's both papers.

Hwang publicly apologized for faking data in the two papers but claimed he was deceived by a fellow researcher who switched his cell lines.

Hwang, stripped of his right to carry out research on cloning human embryos in South Korea, is now focusing on dogs.

In June, the SooAm team announced they had created 17 clones of the endangered Tibetan mastiff.

Hwang is currently in South Korea, but SooAm adviser Hyun said he was not available for comment.

Paul Krugman: Cash for trash

Some skeptics are calling Henry Paulson's $700 billion rescue plan for the U.S. financial system "cash for trash." Others are calling the proposed legislation the Authorization for Use of Financial Force, after the Authorization for Use of Military Force, the infamous bill that gave the Bush administration the green light to invade Iraq.

There's justice in the gibes. Everyone agrees that something major must be done. But Paulson is demanding extraordinary power for himself - and for his successor - to deploy taxpayers' money on behalf of a plan that, as far as I can see, doesn't make sense.

Some are saying that we Americans should simply trust Paulson, because he's a smart guy who knows what he's doing. But that's only half true: He is a smart guy, but what, exactly, in the experience of the past year and a half - a period during which Paulson repeatedly declared the financial crisis "contained," and then offered a series of unsuccessful fixes - justifies the belief that he knows what he's doing? He's making it up as he goes along, just like the rest of us.

So let's try to think this through for ourselves. I have a four-step view of the financial crisis:

1. The bursting of the housing bubble has led to a surge in defaults and foreclosures, which in turn has led to a plunge in the prices of mortgage-backed securities - assets whose value ultimately comes from mortgage payments.

2. These financial losses have left many financial institutions with too little capital - too few assets compared with their debt. This problem is especially severe because everyone took on so much debt during the bubble years.

3. Because financial institutions have too little capital relative to their debt, they haven't been able or willing to provide the credit the economy needs.

4. Financial institutions have been trying to pay down their debt by selling assets, including those mortgage-backed securities, but this drives asset prices down and makes their financial position even worse. This vicious circle is what some call the "paradox of deleveraging."

The Paulson plan calls for the federal government to buy up $700 billion worth of troubled assets, mainly mortgage-backed securities.

How does this resolve the crisis?

Well, it might - might - break the vicious circle of deleveraging, step 4 in my capsule description. Even that isn't clear: The prices of many assets, not just those the Treasury proposes to buy, are under pressure. And even if the vicious circle is limited, the financial system will still be crippled by inadequate capital.

Or rather, it will be crippled by inadequate capital unless the federal government hugely overpays for the assets it buys, giving financial firms - and their stockholders and executives - a giant windfall at taxpayer expense. Did I mention that I'm not happy with this plan?

The logic of the crisis seems to call for an intervention, not at step 4, but at step 2: the financial system needs more capital. And if the government is going to provide capital to financial firms, it should get what people who provide capital are entitled to - a share in ownership, so that all the gains if the rescue plan works don't go to the people who made the mess in the first place.

That's what happened in the savings and loan crisis: The feds took over ownership of the bad banks, not just their bad assets. It's also what happened with Fannie and Freddie. (And by the way, that rescue has done what it was supposed to. Mortgage interest rates have come down sharply since the federal takeover.)

But Paulson insists that he wants a "clean" plan. "Clean," in this context, means a taxpayer-financed bailout with no strings attached - no quid pro quo on the part of those being bailed out. Why is that a good thing? Add to this the fact that Paulson is also demanding dictatorial authority, plus immunity from review "by any court of law or any administrative agency," and this adds up to an unacceptable proposal.

I'm aware that Congress is under enormous pressure to agree to the Paulson plan in the next few days, with at most a few modifications that make it slightly less bad. Basically, after having spent a year and a half telling everyone that things were under control, the Bush administration says that the sky is falling, and that to save the world Americans have to do exactly what it says now now now.

But I'd urge Congress to pause for a minute, take a deep breath, and try to seriously rework the structure of the plan, making it a plan that addresses the real problem. Don't let yourself be railroaded - if this plan goes through in anything like its current form, we'll all be very sorry in the not-too-distant future.

Malaysian blogger jailed for 2 years

Malaysia jailed a prominent political blogger for two years under a strict security law that can keep him in prison indefinitely, a lawyer said Tuesday.

Online commentator Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin, known for his anti-government views, was already in police custody and was served a detention order Monday night, said his lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar.

The order was signed by Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar, who has said Raja Petra's writings pose a threat to national security by creating racial tension.

Raja Petra has increasingly infuriated authorities by publishing numerous claims about alleged wrongdoings by government leaders on his popular site, Malaysia Today, which serves as his blog as well as a news portal. The government has denounced most of Raja Petra's allegations as lies.

Government officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Raja Petra was arrested on Sept. 12 under the Internal Security Act, which allows an initial detention of two months for investigation, followed by a two-year jail period that can be renewed indefinitely.

He will be held at the Kamunting Detention Center in the central state of Perak. The center houses detainees held under the security law, most of whom are suspected Islamic extremists.

Raja Petra's arrest triggered widespread protests by civil society groups, lawyers and other online commentators. Along with Raja Petra, authorities also arrested an opposition lawmaker and a journalist on Sept. 12, but they were released subsequently.

The Internal Security Act is a holdover from British colonial days, when it was used against communist insurgents. Independent Malaysia's postcolonial government has kept it in the statute books and has used it sparingly against political dissidents, ignoring calls from opposition groups and others to disband the law.

A professor and a banker bury their free market dogma

For the last year, as the U.S. economy lurched from crisis to crisis, the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Ben Bernanke, had been warning Henry Paulson Jr., the Treasury secretary, that the worsening situation might ultimately force a sweeping U.S. government intervention.

A longtime student of the Great Depression, Bernanke was acutely aware of what could happen without a decisive move. Finally, the moment that called for action arrived late Wednesday. Less than 24 hours after the Fed bailed out American International Group, the giant insurer, it was clear the turmoil gripping Wall Street was only growing worse and that ad hoc solutions were not working.

Talking into a speaker phone from his ornate office, Bernanke told Paulson that it was time to adopt a comprehensive strategy that Congress would have to approve. Paulson understood. Reluctant in recent days to send Congress a plan that lawmakers had warned had little chance of quick passage, he had worried that a rejection would only further shock the markets. But during two conference calls Wednesday night and Thursday morning, he agreed that they had no choice.

"It just happened dramatically," Paulson said in an interview Friday. "There was only one way that we could reassure the markets and deal with a very significant and broad-based freezing of the credit market. There was no political calculus. It was overwhelmingly obvious."

Just like that, Bernanke, the reserved former Ivy League professor, and Paulson, the hard-charging former Wall Street deal maker, began what would be the U.S. government's largest economic rescue operation in modern times, one that rivals the Iraq war in cost and at the same time may redefine Washington's role in the marketplace for years.

The plan to buy $700 billion in troubled assets with taxpayer money was shaped by two men who did not know each other until two years ago and did not travel in the same circles, but now find themselves brought together by history. If Bernanke is the intellectual force and Paulson the action man of this unlikely tandem, they have managed to create a nearly seamless partnership as they rush to stop the financial upheaval and keep the economy afloat.

Befitting their roles and personalities, Paulson has become the public face of their team — he plans to appear on four Sunday U.S. television talk shows — while the less visible Bernanke provides the historical underpinnings for their strategy.

Along the way, they have cast aside the administration's long-held views about regulation and government involvement in private business, even reversing decisions over the space of 24 hours and justifying them as practical solutions to dire threats.

"There are no atheists in foxholes and no ideologues in financial crises," Bernanke told colleagues last week, according to one meeting participant.

The improvisational nature of their effort has turned President George W. Bush and congressional Democrats into virtual bystanders, sometimes uncertain about what comes next and left to wonder about the new power dynamics in the capital. Seemingly every time lawmakers tried to get a handle on what was happening and what role they might play with elections around the corner, Paulson and Bernanke would show up again on Capitol Hill for another evening meeting with another surprise development.

The two men have been working early and working late, tracking Asian markets and fielding calls from their European counterparts, then reconnecting with each other by phone eight or nine times a day, talking so often that they speak in shorthand. Paulson has powered through the long days with a steady infusion of Diet Coke. Asked twice to testify by the Senate last week, he begged off.

"He told me he had like four hours of sleep," said Senator Christopher Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and chairman of the Banking Committee. But there were limits to Dodd's sympathy. "The public wants to know what's going on," he said.

Bernanke (his drink: Diet Dr Pepper) has made a point of leaving the office by midnight to get at least some rest, but friends say the toll on him is clear as well. Alan Blinder, a longtime friend and former vice chairman of the Federal Reserve, recalled seeing Bernanke at a conference last month in Jackson Hole, Wyoming "He looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders," Blinder said.

And that was before last week.

Bernanke took office in February 2006 and Paulson five months later, both Republicans and Bush appointees, yet arriving from starkly different places. Bernanke, 54, had managed the academic politics of Princeton University's economics department, where he served as chairman, by developing a conciliator's style. Paulson, 62, rose to the top of Goldman Sachs by pounding the phones, and the occasional table.

"Hank is just the most hyperactive, get-it-done kind of guy who's always trying to get the problem solved and move on. He's impatient to fix things," said Allan Hubbard, a former national economic adviser to Bush. "Ben is much more low-key. He's very thoughtful. He's an incredible thinker, listens well, analyzes well and is not intimidated by anyone. It's probably a great pair."

While Bernanke talks in lofty terms and Paulson speaks in great bursts of Wall Street jock language, the new Washington odd couple bonded in part over baseball. The Treasury secretary is a Chicago Cubs fan and the Fed chairman is a Boston Red Sox fan who has adopted the Washington Nationals and shares season tickets with the White House chief of staff, Joshua Bolten.

But neither Paulson nor Bernanke has been deeply involved in the political process before. As they try to navigate Washington together, they have surrounded themselves respectively with advisers drawn from Goldman and career professionals at the Fed.

Paulson initially declined to join the cabinet. He changed his mind only after extensive lobbying by Bolten, a former Goldman executive, and commitments by Bush to let him truly run economic policy, unlike his predecessors. The Hammer, as Paulson has been called since his days on the Dartmouth football squad, brought to Washington his characteristic intensity.

"He is a hurricane. He is used to living in a turbulent world," said John Bryan Jr., a close friend and former chief executive of Sara Lee Corp. "He has lived in a world of deadlines, decisions and pressure-packed things."

Paulson, a Christian Scientist, does not drink or smoke. Once, at a cocktail party where he was giving a speech, recalled Andrew Alper, a former Goldman colleague, Paulson accidentally took a gulp from a glass of vodka, thinking it was water. His face turned bright red and his eyes were watering for an hour. "He just kept going," Alper said. "It did not slow him down."

Bernanke has a more obscure nickname, Helicopter Ben, after a speech he gave in 2002 in which he talked about the Fed's "helicopter drops" of emergency money to keep the system liquid. For Bernanke, the current crisis is the culmination of a lifetime of figuring how the system works from a theoretical viewpoint.

Bernanke made clear long ago that he realized he might someday be called on to act on his studies. Vincent Reinhart, a former Fed official, said Bernanke's research into Japan's financial crisis in the 1990s reinforced his view that the government had to be aggressive in intervening during market crises.

And at a party he had in 2002 to honor the 90th birthday of the economist Milton Friedman, Bernanke, then a governor of the Federal Reserve, brought up the mistakes the United States made in the face of the Depression and promised not to repeat them. "We did it," he said then. "We won't do it again."

Paulson, in the interview Friday, said that Bernanke had long warned that a moment might come like the one they saw last week.

"Going back a long time, maybe a year ago, Ben, as a world-class economist, said to me, 'When you look at the housing bubble and the correction, if the price decline was significant enough,' " the only solution might be a large-scale government intervention, Paulson said. "He talked about what had happened when there had been other situations historically."

Paulson said he agreed but hoped it would not come to that. "I knew he was right theoretically," he said. "But I also had, and we both did, some hope that, with all the liquidity out there from investors, that after a certain decline that we would reach a bottom."

He was also hearing as late as last Monday from senior Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including Steny Hoyer, the House majority leader, and Representative John Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader, that there was no chance Congress would adopt any legislation before it planned to leave town in September. Even Representative Barney Frank, Democrat of Massachusetts, and a proponent of a greater role for the government in the market, said Monday that the issue would have to be resolved by the next president and the new Congress next year.

By Tuesday, however, the troubles were only deepening. Lehman Brothers had declared bankruptcy, Merrill Lynch had agreed to be bought by Bank of America and AIG was on the verge of collapse. Paulson and Bernanke put together an $85 billion bailout of AIG and presented it to Bush.

But the two warned the president that it might not be enough to stabilize the broader crisis. A senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, paraphrased their message to Bush this way: "There may still be problems after this, and if there are, we'll come back to you."

They did, two days later, after plunging stock prices and frozen credit markets made clear the case-by-case strategy was not working. Paulson had been talking with Bush by telephone throughout Wednesday and early Thursday. The decision to finally take a radical, systemwide step came after an endless stream of conference calls involving Fed, Treasury and Securities and Exchange Commission officials, one participant recalled, when Bernanke said: "We have got to go to Congress." Paulson concurred.

On Thursday afternoon, the two men, along with Christopher Cox, the chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, went to the White House to explain their plan. "The president said, 'Let's do it,' " an official said. "There was no hesitation."

Within hours, Paulson and Bernanke were in the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, briefing congressional leaders on how bleak the situation was. Lawmakers were shaken but offered tentative support. Torn by conflicting imperatives to take action and to go home to campaign, they seemed alternately grateful and resentful of the new power couple in Washington. Some referred to "President Paulson" and others groused about an unelected central bank chairman doling out hundreds of billions of dollars.

Paulson and Bernanke came under fire for being too aggressive and for not being aggressive enough. Senator Jim Bunning, Republican of Kentucky, said they were killing the free market. R. Glenn Hubbard, former chairman of Bush's Council of Economic Advisers, said they should have acted sooner.

"The opportunity to have taken bold action would obviously have been better had they done it months ago," he said. "But better late than never."

In the end, what left so many lawmakers and economists frustrated was the sense that no one had a better idea. So they waited for Paulson and Bernanke to give them more details about what they wanted to do.

A few years ago, real estate was all the rage. Earlier this year, the business magazines were telling us to invest in Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch, because those stocks were bound to zoom. Now another herd is on the march.

We're in a paradigm shift, its members say. The current financial turmoil marks the end of the era of wide-open global capitalism. Today's gigantic government acquisitions signal a new political era, with more federal activism and tighter regulations.

This observation is then followed by a string of ethereal gottas and shoulds. We Americans gotta have smart regulation that offers security but doesn't stifle innovation. We gotta have rules that inhibit reckless gambling without squelching sensible risk-taking. We should limit excesses during booms and head off liquidations when things go bad.

It all sounds great (like buying a house with no money down), but do you mind if I do a little due diligence?

In the first place,

the idea that America's problems stem from light regulation and could be solved by more regulation doesn't fit all the facts. The current financial crisis is centered around highly regulated investment banks, while lightly regulated hedge funds are not doing so badly. Two of the biggest miscreants were Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which, in theory, "were probably the world's most heavily supervised financial institutions," according to Jonathan Kay of The Financial Times.

Moreover, there is a lot of lamentation about Clinton-era reforms that loosened restrictions on banks. But it's hard, as Megan McArdle of The Atlantic notes, to see what these reforms had to do with rising house prices, the flood of foreign investment that fed the credit bubble and the global creation of complex new financial instruments for pricing and distributing risk.

In other words, maybe there is something more going on here than just a bunch of laissez-faire regulators asleep at the wheel. But even if it is true that America needs more federal activism, I'm a little curious about what we're going to need to make the system work.

Surely, we're going to need lawmakers who understand what caused the current meltdown and who can design rules to make sure it doesn't happen again. And yet there's no consensus about what caused this bubble.

Some people blame the Fed's monetary policies, but some say the Fed had only a marginal effect. Some argue a flood of foreign investment allowed us to live beyond our means, while others say bad accounting regulations after Enron created a chain reaction of losses.

We'd need regulators who could spot a bubble and squelch a boom just when things seem to be going good, who can scare away foreign investment and who could over-rule popularity-mongering presidents. (The statements by the two candidates this week have been moronic.)

To sum it all up, this supposed new era of federal activism is going to confront some old problems: the lack of information available to government planners, the inability to keep up with or control complex economic systems, the fact that political considerations invariably distort the best laid plans.

This doesn't mean there's nothing to be done. Martin Wolf suggests countercyclical capital requirements. Everybody seems to be for some updated version of the Resolution Trust Corp., though disposing of complex debt securities has got to be more difficult than disposing of commercial real estate.

It's just that there's a big difference between dreaming of some ideal regulatory regime and actually putting one into practice. Everybody says we're about to enter a new political era, rich in global financial regulation. The herd might just be wrong once again.

Rumors swirl around North Korean leader

Many South Koreans fear that Kim's death or incapacitation could precipitate a fierce power struggle in the nuclear-armed country, and perhaps a flood of refugees, that would be felt along the 250-kilometer-long DMZ. Despite its name, this is the world's most heavily armed frontier, carpeted with land mines and guarded by nearly two million troops ready to resume, at a moment's notice, a war that was suspended in 1953, but never officially concluded with a peace treaty.

So far, North Korea has shown no signs of unrest and - if Kim is indeed gravely ill - has been doing its best to demonstrate that it is business as usual inside the world's most secretive regime, officials and analysts in Seoul said.

In the past week, North Korea's state-run media have reported that Kim was executing his normal business, sending letters to foreign leaders and wreaths of flowers to the North's national cemeteries. But they did not show Kim.

"It's all nonsense spread by bad people who wish ill for our country," Hyon Hak Bong, a North Korean diplomat, told South Korean reporters at the border village of Panmunjom on Friday, condemning the news reports.

Reports about Kim's health have surged since he failed to show up at the parade on Sept. 9 marking the 60th anniversary of the North's founding.

Publicly, the South Korean government has said only that it has intelligence reports that Kim had a stroke but is recovering and that his grip on power remains unchallenged.

Kim, 66, took over after his father's death in the first hereditary transfer of power in the Communist world. He does not appear to have groomed any of his three sons as an heir.

His control has been so pervasive and the country's isolation so deep that no outside observers can say for sure who is in and out of favor in Kim's inner circles. The lack of information provides fertile ground for speculation about Kim's condition and its ramifications. News reports citing unnamed sources - or no sources at all, or quoting analysts' conjectures - proliferate, especially in South Korea and Japan.

"What makes the situation more confusing is that commentators' and sources' conjectures are colored by their political and ideological agendas," said Paik Hak Soon, a senior North Korea observer at the independent Sejong Institute near Seoul.

Depending on the Seoul newspaper, Kim's condition varies from "four limbs paralyzed" to "spasms after brain surgery" to "able to brush his own teeth."

Lee Cheol Woo, a governing party lawmaker who was briefed by the government's spy agency, said Kim "can speak and stand if assisted."

Japan's Mainichi newspaper, quoting an unnamed Chinese source, reported this week that Kim began losing consciousness at work in April and could not properly govern. Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Waseda University in Tokyo, recently insisted that Kim died in 2003 and that what the world has seen since have been his body doubles.

As for the cause of Kim's stroke, reports have cited his gourmet tastes and his habit of working late nights. Some South Korean newspapers have ventured that Kim collapsed after his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, was injured in a car accident.

These reports say Kim favors Jong Un, 25, because he "looks and talks like his father," although no picture of him has been available.

Many officials and analysts in Seoul predict that if Kim dies suddenly, the North's military and party elite are most likely to form a collective leadership.
Others say that if he survives long enough, he will eventually try to turn power over to one of his sons.

Lorsque l'évolution des prix de la pierre n'est plus en phase avec la croissance économique, un réajustement est logique. Fin 2007, l'écart est flagrant.

La société Xerfi, spécialiste des études sectorielles, avait anticipé l'actuel retournement de tendance, mais prévoit le retour d'un nouveau cycle haussier à partir de 2011. Selon elle, la phase de hausse des prix de l'immobilier est devenue déraisonnable - c'est-à-dire déconnectée de la réalité économique et financière - en fin de cycle, au tournant des années 2002-2003 pour le marché de l'ancien et 2004-2005 pour le neuf. «En d'autres termes, c'est l'exubérance de la fin de la période qui devra être purgée. D'abord erratique (c'est toujours le cas lorsqu'un marché se retourne), la baisse prendra de l'ampleur par la suite. Après plus d'une décennie de hausse ininterrompue, les prix dans l'ancien reculeraient d'environ 3% cette année et de respectivement 4% et 5% pour les maisons et appartements neufs.»

Selon la société, la baisse des prix atteindra pour l'ancien 14,5% sur l'ensemble du cycle, le point bas se trouvant en 2011.

Du côté du neuf, les prix suivraient la même tendance, avec une chute plus longue et plus profonde pour les maisons individuelles que pour les appartements, avec respectivement un repli qui s'étalerait jusqu'en 2013 pour les premières (baisse totale de 12,5%), contre 2010 pour les seconds (et un repli de 5% seulement). Mais Xerfi ne plonge pas dans le pessimisme et s'attend à un rebond pour l'ancien de l'ordre de 6% entre 2011 et 2015, et d'un peu plus de 10% sur la même période pour les appartements neufs.

FONTENOY : Un euro est-il égal à un franc?

Les prix indiqués des appartements dans mon précédent message correspondent à des biens de bonne qualité de type grand T4/T5. Pour les biens « médiocres » (constructions des années 70, environnement, état général...), les prix de mise en vente avant la spéculation étaient de 300.000 francs soit environ 46.000 euros. Les vendeurs immobiliers osent en demander aujourd'hui environ 185.000 euros soit quatre fois le prix initial(!), profitant de la perte totale de repères liée au passage à l'euro ! Cette volonté de s'enrichir en dormant est économiquement malsaine. Plus que jamais l'acheteur doit cultiver le patriotisme économique en prenant à la lettre les engagements des pouvoirs publics affirmant que le passage à la monnaie unique s'effectuerait sans inflation et spéculation pour revenir aux prix initiaux. Cette correction est d'autant plus aisée et légitime si l'on considère le krach immobilier actuel...

Je suis d'accord avec aligato il ne faut pas acheter en ce moment les prix vont chuter dans les deux ans à venir. Soyons logique avec nos payes de 35 Heures des besoins que l'on nous créés (écran plat téléphone à la mode internet et j'en passe ) une inflation non maitrisé les coûts de l'énergie qui s'envole et ce n'est pas fini comment voulez vous que les gens moyens qui font tourner l'économie je vous le rappelle, puisse encore acheter à des prix qui non plus rien à voire avec la réalitée économique de notre pays.

pour ma part j'ai vendu à temps mon bien une maison dans le (84) 320.000 EUROS par internet quand des agents immobiliers l'avaient évalué à 290.000 en prenant au passage certains 15.000 EUROS !!!!! bien entendu pour assurer leur comme . en ce moment nous attendons que les prix baissent pour acheter une nouvelle maison. Mais plus sincèrement je pense que des villes comme Nice ou j'ai déjà vendu un premier bien ces villes là comme Paris cannes antibes etc ne baisseront pas car il y a une forte demande et des gens fortunés pour les acheter. les français moyens à terme ne pourront plus acheter dans ces villes et devront donc changer de région comme je pense le faire dans les deux ans qui viennent . SANS tomber dans le pessimisme nous entrons dans une période de récession ou les gens vont ce mettre à moins consommer à faire de plus en plus attention . il y a de moins en mois de 4X4 et de plus en plus de petite voiture quand on voie le phénomène logane qui pour le modèle break et pas mal à un prix défiant toute concurrence je ne travail pas pour renault mais dan s le commerce ou je prend comme on dit la température et je vois bien que tout le monde fait attention en ce moment.alors un bon conseil remboursé vos crédits éviter d'acheter des produits qui ne sont pas produits dans l'union européenne cela préservera nos emplois.

Les sites internet chateauonline. com, wineandco.com et 1855.com proposent des prix spéciaux à l'occasion des foires aux vins.

Les premiers sites de commerce électronique de vin ont fleuri dès l'arrivée de ce nouveau média. Beaucoup d'entre eux, à l'exemple de ChateauOnline, ont été créés voilà une dizaine d'années, juste avant l'explosion de la bulle internet. In Japanese election, populist appeals and claims of political theater

Barack Obama accused his opponents of trying to put lipstick on a pig, and some people here are saying that Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party is trying to do much the same thing.

The party, which has governed Japan for a half century, would seem to have departed drastically from back-room politics as usual. As it prepares to choose the next prime minister, it is parading its five candidates, including the first woman to seek the job, on street corners and live television, where they have issued ringing calls for change.

With the last two prime ministers' having failed in quick succession, the party is making a great show of seeking a reformer with genuine popular appeal to restore its flagging fortunes ahead of crucial national elections. The precedent that most of the candidates invoke is Junichiro Koizumi, the popular former prime minister whose message of reform rescued the Liberal Democrats from political crisis seven years ago.

But it is not clear that the push for change is anything more than a show. The overwhelming favorite in the party vote on Monday is the same politician the experts named as the likely winner months before the campaign began: the insiders' candidate, Taro Aso, a hawkish former foreign minister.

That has led many here to wonder whether the whole campaign has just been a skillful exercise in political Kabuki, an effort not to find an actual populist reformer, but to make the anointed winner, Aso, look like one in front of voters in the general election.

"The LDP's only chance is finding someone with high popular support, like Mr. Koizumi," said Takeshi Sasaki, a professor of politics at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, using the party's abbreviation. "But the party is also afraid of a second Koizumi."

According to Professor Sasaki and other political analysts, the party is leery of the real, disruptive change that such powerful populists can bring. Koizumi, after all, became popular by declaring war on his own party.

Koizumi took office in 2001, when Japan was mired in a decade of stagnation and near financial collapse. He turned the country around not only with what he did, but with his oddball charisma and pithy one-liners. Much like Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, he cheered up a nation and convinced it of the need to make painful market-opening changes. Koizumi's strong personal popularity also led the Liberal Democrats to landslide election victories.

That is the part that the Liberal Democrats would love to repeat this time, but without the other policies Koizumi brought with him: smashing the factions that once dominated internal party politics and loosening the grip of Japan's powerful bureaucrats, among other things. These reforms proved enormously popular with the Japanese public, which was fed up with the party's chronic corruption, but wary of handing power to the untested opposition.

Since Koizumi's departure two years ago, the party has been trying to salvage itself from the rubble, with limited success. The factions have made a comeback, though in a weakened state. Even in the current party vote for prime minister, they have failed to play their traditional role of kingmakers, shying from endorsing any of the candidates.

Also, it appears that voters will not tolerate a return to the party's old ways. Dismal approval ratings drove the most recent prime minister, Yasuo Fukuda, out of office in just under a year, after he tried to bring back the politics of closed doors and faction-led deal-making. Public opinion also rejected his predecessor, Shinzo Abe, whose rightist agenda overlooked the bread-and-butter economic concerns of most voters.

Many Liberal Democratic lawmakers describe the party as somehow frozen in mid-evolution. Koizumi destroyed the old political machine, but many Liberal Democrats are resisting their party's transformation into a truly modern political party galvanized by a common ideological agenda.

"The LDP is in a serious crisis because it doesn't stand for anything," said Taro Kono, a Liberal Democratic member of Japan's lower house. "It is just the party in power."

Completing this evolution may take an even more drastic crisis, like the loss of the party's monopoly on power.

"Real change means the creation of a true two-party democracy," said Kozo Watanabe, a senior member of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan. "The LDP does not want real change. It just wants to find someone who can put a popular face on the party."

That someone appears to be Aso, 67, who has been trying to present himself as populist, with some success. He has gotten top marks in popularity polls. Seeking to reach younger voters, he has appeared on television with a popular singing group, and frequently proclaims his affection for comics. He even gave a speech directed at the young people of Japan's comic and videogame subculture, addressing them as "those who call themselves geeks."

Holocaust scholars urge al-Bashir prosecution

Holocaust scholars appealed Monday to the International Criminal Court prosecutor to pursue his indictment of Sudan's president on charges of genocide in Darfur.

The 130 scholars signed a letter to chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo urging him to resist pressure to drop the case against Omar al-Bashir. They warned against putting politics ahead of justice, and said al-Bashir's prosecution would "deter future atrocities."

Up to 300,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million chased from their homes since the conflict in Darfur began in early 2003.

The judges at the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal, based in The Hague, have not yet responded to Moreno-Ocampo's request in July to issue an arrest warrant for al-Bashir.

The Arab League and the African Union have sought a United Nations resolution to suspend the indictment against the veteran Sudanese leader. Russia and China, two permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, have indicated they would support such a move.

But it was the Security Council that first asked Moreno-Ocampo to launch an investigation into Darfur war crimes.

Even some humanitarian organizations have voiced concern that an arrest warrant could provoke a backlash that would worsen the plight of the people of Darfur.

"During the years of the Nazi genocide, too, there were those who put politics ahead of justice," said the statement, organized by the Washington-based David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies.

After World War II, when 6 million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis, the U.S. and British governments sought to prosecute only a few war criminals so as not to jeopardize postwar relations with Germany, the scholars said.

"They were wrong then, and those who are seeking to protect Omar al-Bashir are wrong now," said the letter.

"The governments that are trying to protect al-Bashir should be ashamed of themselves," Rafael Medoff, director of the Wyman Institute, said in a statement.

The signatories included Holocaust experts in the United States, Germany, Israel, England, Russia, Australia and Canada. Medoff said many of the signers rarely participate in public protests.

Sudan's government has rejected the genocide charges. It has said the Darfur troubles result from a tribal conflict over the sparse resources in the desert region, and denied any government involvement.

Last month al-Bashir threatened in an interview with pan-Arab Al-Arabiya TV to expel Darfur peacekeepers if the international court formally seeks his arrest.

U.S. actress and Darfur campaigner Mia Farrow also called for persistence in the case against al-Bashir, referring to "a new frenzy of savage attacks upon civilians." NATO envoys head to Georgia to show support

Defying strong opposition from Russia, NATO's 26 ambassadors will begin a two-day visit to Georgia on Monday in a move aimed at showing support for the Georgian government, despite the risk of increasing tensions between the U.S.-led military alliance and the Kremlin.

The aim of the visit - led by NATO's secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and including meetings with President Mikheil Saakashvili, senior government officials, the opposition and nongovernmental organizations - is for alliance envoys to assess more than just the damage caused in the brief war last month with Russian forces.

They will also use the visit to see whether foreign ministers from the NATO member states will offer Georgia the Membership Action Plan, which sets in motion formal negotiations to join the alliance, when they meet in December.

"We want to show our support for Georgia after what we have seen from the Russian side," de Hoop Scheffer, a former Dutch foreign minister, said during a visit to Latvia last week. "We have our fundamental differences with the Russian Federation. We had them already before they were embarking on disproportionate force in Georgia. But we do not consider Russia a threat."

Russia sent troops and tanks deep into Georgia last month after Georgian forces attacked the breakaway enclave of South Ossetia.

President Dmitri Medvedev of Russia warned last week that Georgia's and Ukraine's membership would be a destabilizing factor for the Western alliance and in the volatile Caucasus region.

Several countries, including the United States, Poland and the Baltic states, are lobbying hard so that Ukraine and Georgia are given something concrete in December. Vice President Dick Cheney made it a point of promising NATO membership to Georgia and substantial financial assistance when he was in the country's capital, Tbilisi, earlier this month.

Apart from their concerns about a more assertive Russia in the region, these governments believe that NATO membership would strengthen their democracies and boost the security of the region.

"Spreading democracy and stabilizing democracies is a peace-enhancing activity," Foreign Minister Radek Sikorksi of Poland said in an interview. "We believe Ukraine and Poland have the same right to choose the way they want to conduct their security policy."

But other member countries, notably Germany, France, Spain and Italy, want to postpone offering Ukraine and Georgia the Membership Action Plan. Apart from their qualms over further enlargement, they fear that it could upset Russia, with unpredictable implications for the alliance.

Indeed, Germany is worried about possibly being dragged into a war in the Caucasus if NATO had to intervene in a conflict involving Georgia or Ukraine.

Aware of the tightrope he is walking, de Hoop Scheffer and NATO foreign ministers agreed last month to develop a NATO-Georgia Commission, which will involve military training; the re-establishment of Georgia's air traffic system, which was bombed during the war; and assisting the Georgian government in understanding the nature of cyber attacks.

　가까운 사물은 잘 보이지만 원거리의 사물은 초점을 맞출 수 없는 근시현상이 발생하는 경우도 많다. 눈의 휴식을 취하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다. 컴퓨터의 밝기를 주변 조명과 비슷하게 하고 모니터 높이를 시선의 방향보다 약간 아래쪽으로 향하게 하는 것이 좋다. 근시가 생겼을 때는 의사의 진료를 받는 것이 좋다.
　한편 눈에 좋은 계란 노른자, 간, 결명자차, 당근 등을 섭취하는 것도 권할만하다.
　

▲신체 부위별 증상들
　컴퓨터에 앉아 늘 긴장하다보면 두통을 겪는 경우가 잦다. 가장 흔하게 나타나는 것이 긴장성 두통. 머리와 목 주의 근육이 과도한 긴장으로 수축하면서 발생한다. 컴퓨터 작업시 나쁜 자세와 열악한 작업환경 등으로 발생하는 긴장이 원인이 된다.
　편두통의 경우 대개 머리 한쪽이 아픈 현상으로 머리와 뇌로 연결되는 혈관의 장애가 원인이 된다.
　편안하고 바른 자세를 유지한 채 상체, 목, 그리고 어깨를 적절하게 지지해주는 것이 근육의 긴장을 풀어준다. 눈과 모니터의 거리와 높이를 적절하게 맞추는 것은 기본. 그러나 두통이 지속된다면 아스피린이나 타이레놀과 같은 진통제와 근육 이완제를 복용하는 것도 요령.
　거북목 증후군은 꾸부정한 자세로 인한 목과 머리가 거북이 머리처럼 튀어나오는 것을 말한다. 주변사람들에게 자신의 자세를 평가해달라고 하면 간단하게 자세에 대한 교정을 할 수 있다. 모니터를 올리고 어깨를 뒤로 제치고 가슴을 펴는 자세가 필요하다. 30분에서 한시간마다 목을 가볍게 스트레칭, 거북목으로 인한 두통과 목과 어깨의 불균형한 자세를 교정해주는 것이 필요하다.

　일명 ‘근막 동통 증후군’은 흔히 담에 걸린 증세다. 바르지 않은 자세로 컴퓨터를 하다보면 어개와 목, 손목과 팔 등 반복된 동작을 하는 부위의 근육에 이상이 생긴다. 근육의 과도한 사용, 지속적인 수축이나 이완 등에 의해 근육 자체에 산소공급 장애로 발생하는 증상이다. 근육이 딱딱하게 뭉쳐있고 통증은 깊고 쑤시는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 얼음찜질, 부드러운 체조 등을 통해 근육을 출어주는 것이 좋다.
　손에 발생하는 수근관 증후군의 경우 손목의 인대 사이를 주행하는 신경에 너무 많은 압박이 가해질 때 일어나는 신경질환 증세. 긴장성 손상의 대표적인 증세다. 엄지와 검지, 중지와 약지의 절반의 감각이 둔화되고 이에 따른 부위에 통증이 생긴다. 더운 물로 찜질하면 효과가 있다.

　마음이 복잡하거나 허전할 때 자기도 모르게 인터넷에 접속하면 위안을 얻을 정도로 의존성이 강하다. 심지어 인터넷을 떠나 있으면 왠지 초조하고 불안하며, 인터넷 상에 무슨 중요한 일이 일어났을 것 같은 생각이 드는 등 금단현상이 나타나기도 한다.
　컴퓨터 앞에 앉아서 인터넷에 연결하는 순간 긴장이 해소되고 안도감과 심지어 쾌감을 느끼기까지한다. 이러한 정도면 전문의의 치료가 필요하다.

Décrit dans les dépositions comme un «obsédé sexuel», il a livré une multitude de détails sur les rencontres, les intermédiaires (rémunérés), les tarifs ou les prénoms et affirmé avoir délibérément choisi des mineures, sans jamais exprimer le moindre remord.

Would-be protesters find the Olympics failed to expand free speech in Beijing

Eleven people came here to the capital on Monday, bent on protesting property losses. They were experienced, having been to Beijing before to petition the central government. They were familiar, all coming from the same town and having been locked up in the same jails. They were crafty, flying up on two planes from a third city, rather than taking the train from their own, and lying low for two days before trying anything.

But they never had a chance.

Some of the group left their hide-out, an apartment in a northern neighborhood, on Wednesday to carry out a protest outside the main Olympic stadium, called the Bird's Nest. But there was no protest, and they have not been heard from. Later, another protester, Huang Liuhong, stepped outside with her supporters, only to find some 50 police officers from her hometown. They told her they had been watching her and the others ever since they arrived.

That night, Huang, 36, speaking by cellphone, said that she and her older sister were being driven back south to their city, Liuzhou, and that a policewoman had just stripped them naked so they would not try to run away.

"We're surrounded by police, and there are more coming to meet us," she said.

The case of Huang and the other disgruntled residents of Liuzhou, who came here to hold demonstrations over four cases of property seizure or destruction, shows that when it comes to freedom of protest, the Olympics changed little in the Chinese capital. The Chinese government still requires citizens to register to protest, and it has yet to grant any permits for people to hold lawful protests in three designated parks in Beijing.

Before the Olympics, the central government ordered local governments to keep protesters or troublemakers from coming to Beijing, and the vigilance of the police officers from Liuzhou shows that that order still stands.

The Paralympics run through Wednesday, and perhaps some restrictions will ease afterward. But citizens like Huang remain skeptical that there has been any real increase in freedom of speech, despite the hopes of the International Olympic Committee that awarding the Games to China would encourage the government to improve its free speech and human rights record.

"Our government is one of all cheaters," Huang said in an interview in an apartment in northern Beijing hours before being detained. "This society isn't ruled by law, but by people's whims."

Before the Games began on Aug. 8, the central government announced the opening of three protest parks in Beijing. But the government went on to detain people who applied to protest — including two frail women in their late 70s who were sentenced to "re-education through labor" for wanting to demand more compensation for the seizure of their homes.

That incident was echoed on Tuesday when the police in Tiananmen Square dragged away an elderly woman who was trying to hold a sit-in there, according to Ming Pao, a newspaper based in Hong Kong. The woman lived in a village near Beijing, and she was accusing the village chief of persecuting her, the newspaper reported. Police officers bundled her into a squad car.

The people from Liuzhou, a midsize industrial city in Guangxi Autonomous Region, had traveled to Beijing on Monday with high hopes.

Huang — on her 11th visit in 16 months — intended to go to Tiananmen Square with her 4-month-old son to unfurl the white banner she had prepared: "Corruption of the Judiciary Is Terrible Corruption." And she planned to jump into the moat of the Forbidden City beneath the portrait of Mao.

Another petitioner, Chen Huiwen, 54, said in an interview before she left for the Bird's Nest: "I'm asking for justice. I want to protest and to march."

Chen is accusing a real estate company and the Liuzhou government of colluding with a criminal gang to drive her and eight family members illegally from their home last year. The house was torn down for a development project.

Chen said her husband, Yu Huojing, came to Beijing several times to petition officials after a local court refused to hear their case. In July, Yu was picked up by the police as soon as he stepped off the train and was sent to a detention center in Liuzhou, Chen said. He was held for 51 days.

"A government official said, 'The Olympics are coming,' " Chen said.

On Aug. 15, in the middle of the Olympics and while her husband was still in detention, Chen arrived in Beijing by train and went straight to Tiananmen Square. She said her goal was to jump into the moat in front of the Forbidden City in an act of protest, as Huang planned to do. But Chen said officers grabbed her as soon as she climbed onto the railing of a curved footbridge that traverses the moat beneath the portrait of Mao.

"I was held in a jail in the Tiananmen area, then I was sent back to Liuzhou, where I was detained for another nine days," she said.

Another woman whose home was torn down, Zhong Ruihua, 62, flew up with her daughter to apply for a permit to protest in Purple Bamboo Park, one of the three designated zones.

Like the others, Zhong and her daughter walked out of the apartment on Wednesday and disappeared from the streets of Beijing. They are probably being sent back to Liuzhou.

The old man who was renting the apartment to the protesters was also picked up by the police. Sitting in a police station, he told a reporter by telephone that he was being charged with harboring criminals.

For now, the rule is simple: Hug your running mate, kiss your wife.

When Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, came out on stage to congratulate his running mate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, after her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul last week, he gave her a hug, not a handshake. Palin got another hug at a rally here outside Kansas City on Monday.

The same McCain-Palin embrace — businesslike, to the point — was on display at a rally over the weekend in Colorado Springs, but this time McCain's wife, Cindy, was on stage. Moving quickly after his clasp of his running mate, John McCain took a short side-step and planted a peck on his wife's cheek.

It has been nearly a quarter century since Walter Mondale almost never touched Geraldine Ferraro in public when they shared the Democratic presidential ticket in 1984, and it is safe to say that times have changed. Back then, Mondale had a strict "hands off" policy and did not even put his palm on Ferraro's back when the two stood side-by-side and waved with uplifted arms.

Anything more, and "people were afraid that it would look like, 'Oh, my God, they're dating,' " Ferraro recalled in a brief telephone interview on Monday, of what now seems like a political Victorian age.

Already, there has been one noticeable shift in protocol: McCain now introduces his wife first, not Palin, when both are on stage. But it was not always that way: at his first postconvention rally with Palin, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, last Friday, McCain began by lavishly praising Palin, who had just rocked the Republican convention. "Isn't this the most marvelous running mate in the history of this nation?" McCain asked the roaring crowd, as his wife stood quietly by.

It was only after two full minutes of Palin accolades that John McCain finally mentioned his wife and her own speech to the convention. "And I love the job that Cindy did last night," McCain said, then swiftly moved to his own remarks.

By the end of the day, in a switch that has stuck, Cindy McCain started getting top billing: "Could I first introduce to you the woman who gave a great speech last night, the best speech of all, Cindy McCain?" John McCain shouted out to a raucous crowd in Sterling Heights, Michigan

John McCain's closest adviser, Mark Salter, insisted that there had been no behind-the-scenes stage direction — "Nobody said, 'Cindy first' " — and that no one in the campaign had discussed hugging etiquette or protocol between McCain and Palin. "They're going to behave like normal human beings," he said. "Nobody ever told him, 'Just shake hands.' "

Nonetheless, etiquette experts weighed in on the hugs, some more approvingly than others.

"He's hugging her to show the world that he's all for her, and protecting her, but she doesn't need that," said Letitia Baldrige, the manners authority and former White House social secretary to Jacqueline Kennedy.

As a general rule, Baldrige recommends a warm, firm handshake between male and female corporate executives and finds embarrassing "all this fake hugging that goes on when people greet each other on television."

But for McCain and Palin, Baldrige said, "it's O.K., because we accept anything now."

Ann Marie Sabath, the founder of At Ease Inc., a business etiquette training firm, deemed the hugging "perfectly fine" and said that once McCain, the top rooster in the pecking order, started the hugging, Palin was welcome to initiate a hug with him. "It's a form of professional endearment," she said. "Getting closer than two arms' length when you know the other person says, 'I respect you, we have a comfort level, we have a professional bond.' "

Christine Todd Whitman, the former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under President George W. Bush who 15 years ago was the first woman elected as New Jersey's governor, said that she, for one, had embraced many of her male counterparts, as long as she knew them well. "I gave them lots of hugs and kisses, depending on the governor," she said. (Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania was one, John Engler of Michigan was another.)

Comfort level is a major factor in hugging protocol. When Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton made their first joint appearance after their bitter fight for the Democratic nomination, in Unity, New Hampshire, in June, Obama placed his hand on Clinton's shoulder but held back from a full hug. Still, the two did share a few whispers, and Obama placed his hand squarely on Clinton's back when the two stood for the classic side-by-side political wave.

So far, the McCain-Palin hugs have been brief and a little stiff, in part because McCain cannot raise his arms up high because of injuries sustained as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. But Palin, too, appears to keep a distance.

She "seems to be cognizant that she is wandering into the danger zone," Christopher Buckley, the novelist and longtime satirist of the ways of Washington, said in an e-mail message, "with the result that as she hugs him, she leans away from him so as to insert some chaste space between them."

Buckley added, "As the nuns used to say before school dances, 'Leave room for the Holy Ghost.' "

Au fait. Il me souvient que notre bien aime president a renvoye la Turquie dans ses 16 metres declarant qu'elle ne pouvait faire partie de L'UE puisque geographiquement elle etait 'surtout en Asie'... Vu que l'heroique Georgie se trouve aux frontieres nord est de la vilaine et non europeenne Turquie, elle va avoir du mal a justifier son statut europeen au vu de la doctrine Sarkozy, non ?

Autre argument avance par Sarkozy lors de son debat electoral avec Miss Segolene, la Turquie a des frontieres avec des etats dangereux (irak, Iran etc..).. Euh, les frontieres georgiennes et leur proximite avec ces memes etats voyous devraient donc aussi nous inciter a la reflexion en toute logique....

Eh bien je comprends que le fig ne passe pas mon commentaire vous avez dit la même chose et parfois en mieux avec un délicieux humour noir!! Juste quelques points : d aucuns ont en fait évoqué l origine allemande de Catherine II. Dans l histoire des guerres d invasion, vous oubliates la Finlande en 1938-39 (qui en fait se sauva de justesse avant de se fourvoyer dans le camp allemand). Et enfin Staline qui, élevé en Géorgie et en aurait gardé l accent, avait gardé une profonde haine de ce pays. Sinon rien à ajouter!

Très intéressante les réactions citées, et ô combien révélatrices du mode de pensée et du système éducatif russe !

Ainsi, la Russie n'a toujours été dans son histoire qu'un pays pacifique qui n'a jamais attaqué les autres mais qui n'a fait que se défendre ou répondre à l'appel au secours des peuples voisins!

Et quand ce n'a pas été le cas (notamment l'URSS qui n'a évidemment rien à voir avec la Russie), ce n'est pas la faute aux « vrais russes », mais à des « étrangers » qui étaient au pouvoir. A croire d'ailleurs que durant ces épisodes (un peu plus de 80 ans au XXème siècle), pas un « vrai russe » ne fréquentait les allées du pouvoir et que le pays était en situation d'occupation par une armée étrangère....

Le plus notable c'est que les « étrangers » cités sont tous des ressortissants de peuples ou de territoires dont les Russes ont beaucoup de mal à accepter l'indépendance.... Tout ceci ne vous rappelle décidément pas l'ambiance de l'Allemagne des années 30 ?

A la liste des « étrangers » relevés, on notera d'ailleurs quelques inexactitudes et quelques oublis (volontaires ?) :

-Catherine 2 qui était allemande

-Lenine dont les grands parents maternels étaient des commerçants juifs d'Odessa (à propos « Juif » faisait partie des « nationalités » reconnues en URSS et inscrites sur le passeport intérieur). Il paraît même que la famille maternelle de Medvedev n'a pas toujours été orthodoxe ce qui a valu avant les élections une campagne des nationalistes contre lui et ses origines....

-l' « Ukrainien » Khroutchev est né dans le gouvernement de Koursk (Russie), n'a passé que quelques années de sa jeunesse dans le Donbass, et s'est particulièrement illustré en 1937 et les années suivantes comme secrétaire général du parti communiste d'Ukraine par son zèle à dépasser les objectifs d'élimination physique des opposants et par la déportation de plus d'1 millions d'Ukrainiens de l'Ouest (10% de la population concernée) après que la Pologne eut chaleureusement demandé à la Russie de venir occuper l'Est de son territoire en 1939 (2 ans avant le début de la Grande Guerre Patriotique)

On comprend également très bien le complexe typiquement russe de complot et de menace de l'étranger vis à vis de la Russie si on explique aux écoliers russes que l'expansion incessante depuis le 14ème siècle d'une petite principauté (la Moscovie qui s'est enrichie et a assis au départ sa puissance sur les autres principautés russes en se faisant le collecteur d'impôts pour le compte de la Horde d'Or) pour devenir l'empire russe (ou l'URSS son successeur) par sa défense contre des attaques ennemies ou l'assistance apportée à des appels au secours de pays frères menacés et aussitôt absorbés.....

Tout le monde sait effectivement que c'est parce que l'accueil des peuples du Caucase était très chaleureux qu'il a fallu un siècle à la Russie pour conquérir la région. Il est tout aussi évident que c'est parce qu'ils menaçaient Moscou que les khanats d'Asie centrale ont été occupés et intégrés au XIXème s.

Le drame actuel de la Russie, c'est que contrairement aux autres puissances coloniales européennes, elle n'a pas encore accepté la décolonisation de son empire. A sa décharge, on notera que cet empire s'est constitué par conquête de territoires mitoyens et non par conquête de territoires d'outre mer comme tous les autres pays européens, ce qui rend la rupture plus difficile

LA mauvaise foi est sans limite. La Russie n attaque jamais, elle se défend! Euh le XXeme siecle c est pas tres loin. L Afghanistan vous savez le meme type de guerre qu on reproche aux américains (et a leurs alliés!)? et argument supreme, c est pas la Russie, c est l empire tsariste ou l URss.Mais bien sur! aucun des deux n est sous influence directe des russes. On peut aussi parler Tchétchénie ou Finlande en 1939! La aussi les bombardements c est pour se défendre. On croirait entendre du Molotov. Je n oublie pas l invasion conjointe de la Pologne, sans déclaration de guerre, par les russes et allemands! L histoire de la Russie est faite de guerre d invasion puisqu il s agit d un empire multipolaire comme bcp se plaisent à le rappeler, donc fait de conquêtes. Sinon on peut dire la même chose de l Empire francais, c est pas des guerres de conquete c est pour se défendre et apporter la "civilisation"! Tres facile de critiquer l hypocrosie anglaise, de loin la plus élaborée, quand on fait pareil, et je sais de quoi je cause on servait les mêmes arguments quand on s opposait à ces mêmes britishs et qu ils nous soufflaient la place par une plus grande habileté diplomatique.

Mais rassurez vous, mon propos n est pas de défendre les Usa, encore moins ce c... de Cheney voire Sakashvili, le benêt, encore que je trouve la aussi fort du collier de lui reprocher son attachment a Staline quand encorebcp de russes y voient un héros national et que ce dernier lui même se voyait d abord russe (avec un fort accent parait-il) et était connu pour détester sa terre de naissance!

Au lendemain du sommet extraordinaire de Bruxelles sur la Géorgie, la Russie qui n'a pas été sanctionnée par les Vingt-Sept, se sent en position de force et plus sûre de son bon droit que jamais. Moscou a entretenu mardi le flou sur l'une des principales demandes de l'Union européenne (UE) : le retrait des soldats russes «sur les positions antérieures au déclenchement des hostilités» du mois dernier. Ce retrait, mentionné dans l'accord de cessez-le-feu négocié le 12 août dernier par Nicolas Sarkozy, sera au centre de la nouvelle tournée du président français à Moscou et Tbilissi prévue lundi prochain.

«Bien sûr, ils ne sont pas là pour toujours», a ainsi déclaré le représentant de la Russie auprès de l'UE, Vladimir Tchijov, en évoquant les quelque 500 soldats russes encore stationnés en Géorgie en dehors de la province séparatiste d'Ossétie du Sud et autour du port stratégique de Poti. Le diplomate russe a lié le départ de ces militaires déployés dans des check points à «la création du mécanisme international» mentionné dans l'accord de cessez-le-feu (paragraphe 5) et à «l'arrivée des observateurs de l'OSCE».

Un son de cloche moins conciliant est toutefois venu de Vladimir Poutine, via son porte-parole Dmitri Peskov qui a tenu une conférence de presse téléphonique. «Le travail de M. Sarkozy sera très facile, a assuré Dmitri Peskov, toujours pince-sans-rire, il n'aura qu'à témoigner qu'il n'y a plus de troupes russes sur le sol géorgien.» Car, explique le porte-parole du tout-puissant premier ministre, il n'y a plus de «militaires» russes sur le territoire géorgien, «seulement des forces de paix». Et celles-ci stationnent dans le cadre des «mesures de sécurité» mentionnées dans le même paragraphe 5 de l'accord de cessez-le-feu. Sous-entendu, les Russes qui tiennent des postes de contrôle jusqu'à la principale route est-ouest de la Géorgie, n'ont pas forcément vocation à partir.

EU Parliament urges Russia to withdraw troops

The European Parliament strongly urged Russia on Wednesday to "honor all its commitments" to withdraw its troops under a cease-fire agreement with Georgia.

The European Union's resolution also criticized the alleged use of cluster bombs by Georgian and Russian military officials during their war last month, and condemned alleged looting in Georgia carried out by Russian forces and allied militia groups.

On Monday, Human Rights Watch said that Georgia — as well as Russia — dropped cluster bombs during last month's war. The rights group said Georgia's government has acknowledged it, while Russia continues with denials.

The EU resolution urges Moscow to ensure the "complete and immediate" withdrawal of its troops from Georgia and to reduce its force strength in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The war began Aug. 7 after Georgia launched an assault on the Russian-backed South Ossetia province in a bid to bring it under central government control. Russian forces swiftly repelled the offensive and drove deep into Georgia, whose staunchly pro-Western President Mikhail Saakashvili has angered Moscow by seeking NATO membership for the Caucasus nation.

U.S. to offer Georgia $1 billion in aid

The Bush administration plans to announce a $1 billion package of aid to help rebuild Georgia after its rout by Russian forces last month, an administration official said on Wednesday, as Vice President Dick Cheney arrived in the region to signal support for Georgia and other countries neighboring Russia.

The aid - along with Cheney's visit - are sure to increase tensions with Russia, whose leaders have accused the United States of stoking the conflict with Georgia over its two separatist regions, by providing weapons and training to the Georgians. President Dmitri Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have also complained that humanitarian supplies delivered by the U.S. Navy and Air Force since Russian forces routed Georgian forces and occupied parts of the country were a disguise for delivering new weapons.

Administration officials have dismissed those accusations as baseless.

The aid package, which is expected to include money for rebuilding Georgia's infrastructure and its economy, is scheduled to be detailed in Washington later Wednesday by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rive, the official said. It is not clear whether the package will include any direct military support, which officials have acknowledged they are considering. The aid package reflects an intensification of the administration's support for Georgia, though President George W. Bush and his senior advisers have yet to settle on any punitive actions against Russia.

Cheney arrived Wednesday in Azerbaijan on the first of three stops in the region, which the Russians consider their "near abroad," in what one of his aides last week described as an effort to bolster countries in the face of their more assertive neighbor. Cheney is scheduled to visit Georgia on Thursday, followed by Ukraine.

While Cheney's plans to visit Azerbaijan and Georgia were made before Russia's military operation in Georgia, the trip took on added significance following the conflict, which began on the night of Aug. 7 when Georgian forces tried to seize control of South Ossetia, only to be driven back when Russian forces poured into the country.

Although a cease-fire ended the fighting, Russian forces have still not withdrawn from parts of Georgian territory near South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia. Russia last week recognized both as independent countries, a move that has failed to win any international backing.

Azerbaijan, like Georgia, is a former Soviet republic that has sought closer ties to the West and the United States, and it is considered a vital crossroads for oil and gas from the Caspian Sea.

Underscoring the point, Cheney's first meetings here in Baku were with representatives of two international oil companies - William Schrader of BP Azerbaijan and Robert Satmalchi of Chevron - according to a spokeswoman, Megan Mitchell. She said they discussed "their assessments of the energy situation in Azerbaijan and the broader Caspian region, especially in light of Russia's recent military actions in Georgia."

BEIJING: Two police officers who were killed and five who were injured in an ambush in the far west of China last Wednesday were ethnic Uighurs searching for a woman suspected of involvement in earlier violence, a policeman in the village where the ambush took place said Tuesday.

The attackers were also Uighurs, a Muslim Turkic group common throughout the western autonomous region of Xinjiang. Brandishing knives, the attackers set upon a group of unarmed police officers as the officers were walking through a cornfield in Qizilboy village, said the policeman, who was interviewed by telephone, and who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he had not been given permission to talk to reporters.

The authorities gave few details at the time of the incident; the policeman's account is the fullest thus far. It suggests that some of the recent violence in Xinjiang could be aimed at Uighurs seen by other Uighurs as collaborators with the ethnic Han Chinese, who make up the leadership of the Communist Party and govern Xinjiang.

Many Uighurs resent rule by the Han Chinese and advocate greater political freedom and economic benefits or an independent Uighur-run nation. But some Uighurs have also benefited from policies put in place by the Communist Party, including many who work in the security forces or in the local government.

Two days after the attack, police officers shot dead six suspects and arrested three during a search near the Silk Road oasis town of Kashgar, also in western Xinjiang, according to a report on Saturday by Xinhua, the official state news agency. The nine were linked to both the Wednesday attack and one on Aug. 12, Xinhua reported. In the earlier incident, attackers armed with knives killed three security officers and wounded one at a road checkpoint in the town of Yamanya, 60 miles east of Kashgar.

Some reports have said the victims of that earlier attack were also Uighurs. The policeman in Qizilboy village declined to give further details about the woman the police were seeking. A detailed report last week by Radio Free Asia, a station that promotes democracy and is financed by the American government, identified her as Anargul, 22, and said that she was suspected of aiding the people who carried out the checkpoint attack. The report said that she was the daughter of Amangul, a 50-year-old woman arrested after that attack. There are other indications that women might be playing a prominent role in the violence unfolding in Xinjiang. On Aug. 10, a 15-year-old girl was wounded while throwing an explosive in the western town of Kuqa, Xinhua reported. That day, a series of assaults and bombings took place across Kuqa, killing two people and injuring five others. It is unclear whether the violence is part of a larger pattern, or whether separate groups are carrying it out. The Chinese government has not pointed to a specific group as being responsible for the attacks in Yamanya and Qizilboy. Officials in Kashgar attributed a deadly attack in that town on Aug. 4 on two Uighurs whom the officials said were linked to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which advocates independence in Xinjiang and supposedly has a base in Pakistan. The group calls itself the Turkestan Islamic Party and issued videos threatening the recent Olympic Games. The Aug. 4 assault in Kashgar left 16 paramilitary police officers dead and 16 injured after the two men rammed a truck into a large group of officers and then attacked them with homemade explosives and knives. Outside scholars of Xinjiang and Uighur exiles say the Chinese government is intent on painting much of the recent violence as part of surge in terrorism so that it can carry out a crackdown across Xinjiang. Some scholars say the violence could be rooted in criminal activities or revenge. Huang Yuanxi contributed reporting for this article.
